Just reported on the radio here in Houston.

Mike James signs for 5 years. Haven't heard the financial amount yet.

    But he's a Wolf.

    <div class="quote_poster">Quoting deception:</div><div class="quote_post">yeah he signs but four years: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2516449

    congrats!!!</div>

The Minnesota Timberwolves' willingness to make a four-year commitment to Mike James has landed them the best point guard still available on the free-agent market.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com that James on Tuesday agreed to sign a four-year contract with the Wolves worth an estimated $25 million.

James also confirmed the agreement to ESPN790 in Houston on Tuesday.

Wednesday is the first day free agents can officially sign contracts.

James had narrowed his choice to Minnesota, Dallas and Houston -- where he maintains an offseason home -- and indicated over the weekend that the Mavericks had a slight edge, largely because of his relationship with Mavs coach Avery Johnson and their recent trip to the NBA Finals.

But the Mavericks and Rockets, according to sources, wouldn't commit to more than a three-year offer to the 31-year-old.

Minnesota's four-year pitch and the chance to team with Kevin Garnett won it for the Wolves, who have injected their backcourt with plenty of scoring potential by signing James and acquiring rookie Randy Foye on draft night.

Signing James alleviates Minnesota's need to start Foye as a rookie. James would likely team with Ricky Davis as the Wolves' starters in the backcourt, with defensive stopper Trenton Hassell at small forward and Foye coming off the bench.

If Foye can make an immediate impact and James can approach his production from last season's breakout performance in Toronto -- 20.3 points and 5.8 assists per game, as well as 44.2 percent shooting from 3-point range -- Garnett figures to be pleased.

The Wolves have resisted all trade interest in Garnett, vowing to take one more stab at building around their 30-year-old franchise player by finding scorers to play off him.

Hopefully foye will start at the two and hassell at the three. this could be a good lineup. i realy want foye to start and for ricky to comeo off the bench and give us a lot of scoring. i am mad now, but may not be later. i'll wait before i make my descision on this, and hey, at least mchale signed a descent player.

I can't see Ricky coming off the bench again after the way he performed

This really doesn't make that sense to me as I think that they got a very similiar player already in Randy Foye, arguably the leading canidate to be ROY before today. Even though McCants is likely gone for the year, Foye+James backcourt= small, and Foye coming off the bench makes the wolves not selecting Roy for themseleves look stupid. Who knows though, maybe he can be the Ben Gordon of 06-07.

this is the exact reason i didnt want james. he is going to stunt foyes developement, and cause us a lot of problems with our rotation. i hope that casey can figure it out.

truth be told-the raps let him walk so they could have a favourable sane to insane ratio.

this twolves bunch resembles the bunch of a few years ago.
spree gone, ricky davis in; cassel gone, mike james in.

Have you guys given up on Marko Jaric yet or is he still in the plans?

If Marko is still in the plans, and actually does something, it makes the signing even better. Mike James can play SG on offense and PG on defense while Jaric plays SG on defense and PG on offense. Ricky will start at the SF spot, and Foye will backup Mike and Jaric at the 1/2.

At least Minnesotta is making some moves to not be sucky, which is good. I like the signing for them. Mike can shoot the lights out, and he's not afraid to take (and make) big shots.

^^hassell will be starting, if not, i will tweak! i think jaric will hopefully be the perfect role player off the bench for us. he can play the 1,2,and 3.

Yea, I like Hassell, but I've always felt he's a guy better suited off the bench, but ah well, he's not bad, his defense is nice, it's just that he's at times a liability offensively because teams just are scared of him even though he can hit some mid-range shots and put the ball on the floor a little. I always wondered what happened to his 3PT shot after his rookie year in Chicago where he shot 60-165 (36.4%) from downtown.

he hit a lot of his threes this year, but didnt take any really. i think he is developing into a good player, and a perfect role player.

Darn you Mike James! I wanted him to be in Houston. But oh well.. If he feels Minnesota was the best choice..I wish him good luck.. But one question.. Why would he go to Minnesota? That is one place, out of Houston and Dallas, where he has the least chance to win a championship.. So why go to Minny instead of Htown and Dallas?

James wanted a player option on his fourth year, and the Rockets/Mavs were unwilling to offer that. He also wanted a trade kicker, which was a request that the other two didn't want as well. After all the ballyhoo about wanting to play for a championship, it still came down to more money.

Wonder what KG will say in the middle of the season when James is taking 20 shots a game.

KG: "Mike's gotta pass the ball more."

James: "I am the way I am. If you scouted me at all, I'm a shoot-first point guard."

Hehe.. There is one reason I didnt want james to come here, and that is because he was gonna take shots away from Tmac and Yao.. So im kind of happy he didnt come..
