<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Shammond Williams, who has been out of the NBA for the past two seasons, has agreed to a one-year contract to join the Lakers.

Williams' agent, Bill Duffy, said his client will sign for the biannual exception of $1.75 million today.

Duffy said the holdup had been working out a deal to buy Williams out of a contract with his old team in Spain, which Duffy said is "pretty much done."

Williams, a 6-foot guard who is best known as a shooter more than a "true" point guard, is the second free agent with whom the Lakers have agreed to a contract.

Vladimir Radmanovic agreed on July 1 to the mid-level exception that will pay him about $29 million over five years. Radmanovic, who played for the Clippers last season, will sign his contract today, the first official day free agents can sign. Radmanovic, a 6-10 forward known for his outside shooting, will be introduced at a news conference today.

Duffy said Williams will be in LA later for his news conference.

"He's back in the league with the Lakers," Duffy said in a phone interview Tuesday. "He's very happy to be back."

Williams, 31, played in the NBA for six years and with six teams, the last being the New Orleans Hornets in 2003-04.

He averaged 6.1 points on 40.1 percent shooting, 36.3 from three-point range, over his NBA career. His career high was 28 points, against the Lakers in 2000 when he played for the Seattle SuperSonics.

Williams, a former North Carolina standout, played in Russia during the 2004-05 season and in Spain last year.

He averaged 13.4 points and 4.2 assists for FC Barcelona. He made 59.6 percent of his field goals, 40.8 percent of his three-pointers.

Williams was MVP of the 2005 FIBA Europe League All-Star game.

I always liked him as a Sonic because he had so much potential. But he always made horrible decisions and took bad shots. Maybe he's changed his game and mindset.

We shouldn't jump the gun on judging this deal just yet. Shammond won the MVP in 2005, and the NBA game is catering more and more to players with Shammond's skillset. He might be a great fit for the Triangle with his shooting touch.

The Lakers improved their backcourt depth, but I still think we need another player at the SG/SF position to be strictly a defensive specialist. Greg Buckner?, Adrian Griffin?, Tony Delk?

It'll be pretty difficult to add another player with the number of players that are on our roster as of now. We need more defense and we definetly don't need another shooter. In order to add more players, we can either do a 2 for 1 trade, or Mitch must release someone (Aaron Mckie?).

PS: Shammond Williams should rock the 'fro to make him look taller

[IMG]</div>I wouldn't doubt to see McKie waived or him packaged with someone else in a trade to bring over some more depth for the team and give us an extra roster spot to bring back someone like Profit.

I love this signing, actually. At first I didn't, but I found out more and more about Williams, and I think he could be the perfect PG for us.

He was great at UNC, and I thought he was an exceptional passer with the Sonics. Comapred to Smush, I'd consider him a GREAT update in terms of his passing ability. I'm not too sure about his shooting abilities but I know he will do better then Smush with the starting PG spot. Thank God if Smush goes to the bench, I get nervous everytime he has the rock in his hands for consecutive posessions.

I really don't know why so many don't like Smush. Sure we need a better PG but he isn't as garbage as you people make him out to be. It was his first season starting much less making it to a playoff game and I think that lil bastard did one hell of a job.

Yeah I think the majority of fans still haven't forgiven him for his playoff collapse and that combined with questions on his work ethic make many look for other players to fill the PG spot. I think for Smush this was a great year from going to zero to starter and to the playoffs!

smush was awesome for you guys this year. it wasnt his fault you guys lost in the playoffs, it was the whole teams fault. i dont see why you want to replace him so much. he fits the triangle offense pretty well, and can be the second scoring option many times over lamar.

Now this isn't about the thread, but since every1's doing it, I might as well too.
Smush, was, as many of you have stated, awesome for us this year. I don't understand why so many people complain. It's like people only remember the LAST thing that he gave us, and not the consistent and stabile work he did for us, for almost the whole season.

Now, Shammond, who has been playing in Europe, is a nice player. If im not mistakin' he played for Barcelona and was a good PG. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be Aaron McKie 2.0. I'd love to see him have a major impact on our game.

Did you all know that Smush wasn't even expected to make the team? Let alone start? If it wasn't for Smush, we probably never would have even made the playoffs in the first place. If Smush hadn't emerged as our starter, who would take his place? Sasha? Mckie? Either way you look at it, you can't blame Smush for a single thing. He already has exceeded the expectations.

    Exactly.

Ontopic: Although I haven't seen Williams play all these people giving him some hope has got me looking up as well. I hope he does good.

The problem with Smush is his attitude. He came into the summer and 1st half with everything to lose. He was playing very well early in the season and was the front runner for Most Improved Player. Once he got comfortable with becoming the starter he got complacent and this didn't sit well with most Laker fans. His defense was horrendous in the 2nd Half of the season, and when crunch time came, PJax had Sasha out there or played with a big lineup with Walton on the court.

So I blame Smush for taking his starting role for granted.

Hopefully Jordan will push Smush to his limits this season. All I know is, Smush better be in top shape come training camp, because we've got a couple of guys that will push him for the starting spot. Yes, that even includes Sasha, who was great in the playoffs.

59.6 percent of his field goals, 40.8 percent three-point fg. If he can produce these stats again I will be very Happy. Hopefully he'll work hard learn the triangle quickly and bring some new skills after being in Europe.
