Did Wilt Chamberlain really do something sensational or was it just a better than average night for him when he scored 100 in a game. I mean, I think I remember hearing that at his prime he averaged 50 a night. Wilt the Stilt is said to be the most dominant player ever, but is that because at the time basketball just wasn't what it is today. For instance, was a pro in basketball as much of a pro in a sport like baseball which wasn't so much in a developmental phase during the time. I am only rounding off my 17th year on this earth so I can't recall what things were like except for what I see on old video footage. Anyways, my real question is, "Did Wilt really make an extraordinary feat considering the conditions of the game of bball itself and the game that he set the record in? Or, was KB8's performance against a dismal Raptor's team considerably more significant considering the game of bball is at a point where much isn't likely to change in the way it's played. The Raptors team may not have been that great, but keep in mind that they are all basketball players who have had to meet extraordinary standards just to wear their jerseys. Give me your thoughts.
It doesn't matter if he did it against Toronto. I've seen college games where the team is way better than their opponent and a guy doesn't drop 81 points. It's an amazing performance against any team, especially one at the NBA level where the talent level is much higher than in places like Europe or in the NCAA.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting youn6-1:</div><div class="quote_post">I think Wilt's 100 was harder because there was no three point line.</div> even if there was one, im pretty sure that he wouldnt take 3s. anywayz i think kobe's was greater. you have to keep in mind that back then, i think there was no offensive goaltending rule so his team could be jacking up shots and he'd just tip it in on its way down. wilt was also very tall, and was above average height for a center. wilt was so dominant and almost unstoppable getting points so i think kobe's was much harder to achieve.
Kobe, hands down. To be a 6-7 guard and score 81 points in 2006 with a bunch of atheltic defenders guarding you (although Sam Mitchell is a dumbass for not double teaming him...that was perhaps the worst coaching I have ever seen), and do it in the process of HELPING YOUR TEAM WIN when they were losing by 18 at half time if quite an achievement. Wilt scored 100 when he was the most dominant player in the league when the league itself was full of players ALOT shorter then he was. Forget the 3 point shot, all Wilt needed to do was stand under the basketball and recive the pass, lay it in. Consider that not even someone as dominant as Shaq has ever scored over 63....and Bryant had that after like the 3rd quarter...FOR THE SECOND TIME IN ONE SEASON...do you realize how talented he is offensively? It's unparalleled. That 62 point game should have recieved much more recognition in my opinion....especially considering he outscored the entire Maverick team....I mean that's just legendary. Had Wade done that, the NBA and media would have labelled him a God and an angel and made it mandatory for him to play the rest of the season with a halo hanging above his head at all times.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Sam Mitchell is a dumbass for not double teaming him</div> Did you see that game? They weren't letting him run around. They were pressing the pressure down on him. I distinctly remember at one point when there was a triple team....
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Did you see that game? They weren't letting him run around. They were pressing the pressure down on him. I distinctly remember at one point when there was a triple team.... </div> Sam Mitchell began to double him when the Raptors were already losing and Kobe was just scoring for the fan's request....for the love of God, Kobe had 49at the midway point of the 3rd or something and I remember a bunch of times he had JOSE CALDERON of all people doing single coverage on him. That was the worst display of defense I have ever seen....if a guy's on the verge of scoring 50 on your team in the third quarter, wouldn't it be smarter to DOUBLE TEAM A BIT MORE. Also, there were times when JOEY GRAHAM was put on Kobe Bryant....who the hell puts a slow and often confused rookie on a potent scorer like that...I don't know man, that was just horrible coaching IMO..
God damn I really hate this comparisson. 100 is greater than 81, it doesnt matter what time period he was playing in, 100 is a greater number than 81 and always will be. That ends the argument right there. Until Kobe has a 100 point game himself, you cant even compare the 2, its like if you were to compare Kobes 81 against the Raptors to MJ's 69 against the Cavaliers.
Someone needs to give you'll a lesson in basketball history it was much more physical back in those days in wilts first game he adh 2 teeth knocked out and several ribs broken in the 50'sand 60'3 hand checking and body checking were legal the boston celtics were the dominant team of that era and they played a rough physical style of basketball and if anyone knows anything about basketball in any era you would know that the referees force every team to play the way the dominant team of the league plays. Wilt lead the league in rebouning 11 years if your argument of him being taller than anyone had merit then why dont you hold shaq up to the same standard????? Shaq outweighs the average center of his era by 75 - 100 pounds on average but he has never lead the league in rebounding not even once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6 foot four charles barkley and 6 foot 8 dennis rodman outrebounded him consistently.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Shiver:</div><div class="quote_post">Barkley is 6 foot 6 and what does anything you said about rebounding have to do with wilt and kobe?....</div> Barkley has been saying he's 6'4 and half for as long as I can remember him playing till now. They just gave him an extra inch and a half. Like they do with 80% of the league. And the only number that could go beyond Wilt 100. Is 101 lol. But yeah there's no comparing 81 points to someone who scored 19 more points to a already incredible number.
I'm more impressed by the Maverick game anyway. He had 9 more points at the end of the third quarter than the 81 point game. Wilt's 100 isn't tainted? Then why doesn't anyone average 25 rebounds per game anymore? Did he not also score on some 6-5 rookie center?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting NBA MAN:</div><div class="quote_post">Once again people. 100 is a larger number than 81. Its 19 points more. That is a big difference.</div> No one said 100 isn't more than 81, some just believe this is a superior era.
