Im sorry But i have to disagree with your assertions about Kobes game being better than wilts. You claim players are more athletic now than then so Kobe had a harder challenge. I really hope you tuned into USA getting beat by Greece in the world games. The kind of thinking you exhibit in your article explains why we have not as a country won a world competition since 1994(14 years). For some reason since the late 80's and nineties we have made the grievous mistake of assuming that just because some one is a great athlete they automatically have the aptitude to play basketball and we have paid dearly for this assumption by looking like clowns on the international basketball arena. We send the best athletes to every world competition but we are getting hammered because we refuse to see that great basketball players do not necessarily have to be high flying dunking athletes. I did not see the greek team attempt one dunk. But all these non athletes you ridiculed about wilt playing against were almost exact replicas of the greek team that beat the athletic usa team with simple fundamental basketball. maybe after we dont qualify for the olympics next summer we will finally see ther light.
I don't think is any better because back then when Will was playing, specially that particular game, he didn't have much of a resistance. plus the fact that Kobe was scoring in many ways. I think Kobe did better
i would usually say wilt-the-stilt's perfomance was better not only because he got 19 more points but because FYI, it is harder for a center to score than a guard (in general). a guard can dribble-penetrate or shoot almost whenever. either way, they have to be pretty talented to rack up that many points. for a big man (or "goliath" lol), he has to wait for someone to pass him the ball. then when he gets the ball, all he can do is try to post up and then when he picks up his dribble all he does is pivot and then shoot without getting a 3-second violation (which there wasnt in wilt's era) or an offensive foul etc. (in other words, a guard had more freedom on what to do) BUT, for wilt's case, i'd say differently. because at that time, the defense he played against couldnt keep up with him at all. so they fouled. so he had to learn to shoot alot of free throws, which he did do in the 100-point game. as for kobe, i'd say he has more talent, whereas wilt chamberlain was just - BIG. its true that handchecking benefited kobe but that rule applies to every other player , and u don't see them scoring in the 60's in three quarters (ref: dallas game). btw, its true that the raptors have terrible defense (thats the main reason they suck because they average 104 ppg & they have very good offense) but its still more defense than no defense at all
i am pretty sure there was a 3-second violation when wilt played. The rule was established to slow down george mikan who played before wilt.
fyi in wilts day handchecking and body checking were legal! in wilts first game in the nba he had 2 teeth knocked out and several ribs broken. since the boston celtics were the dominate team of that era and they played physical basketball the referees made everyone else play the style of ball that favored the dominate team. that is how the referees control all eras of basketball. michael jordan and dr. j would havent gotten their necks broke if they played in that era and came flying down the lane. wilt put up unbelievable numbers even though the referees allowed him to get laid on the altar and crucified. clyde lovelette 6'10"(bill russell back up) hit wilt so hard that 2 of his teeth were imbedded so far in his jaw that his whole face swoll up and he got infected. kobe bryant would not have put up 81 in that era ill put my life on it!! you say kobe is more skilled than wilt(are you serious)has kobe ever lead the league in assist wilt lead the league in assist(the only center ever) here was the greatest in the history of the game passing the ball to guys who could not score in a game what he averaged a quarter. just think how far out of reach the wilts scoring title would have been if he had of been as selfish as kobe. do you think kobe would stop scoring this year just to lead the league in assist? how about wilts record of playing an entire year and never coming out of a game. Can you imagine playing a whole season never coming out of a game even though people are teeing off on you every night and the referees will not call fouls on them!!! how about the fact that wilt never fouled out of a game even though the refs let him get murdered every night. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting Trajko:</div><div class="quote_post">I don't think is any better because back then when Will was playing, specially that particular game, he didn't have much of a resistance. plus the fact that Kobe was scoring in many ways. Like if Kobe tryed to drive and do that stuff he did to Toronto, hed get knocked out.
Due to the fact that this thread is already old and was just brought back to life after it's been debated to death....it's getting closed.
