<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">This is the story that was supposed to say the 76ers had completed their agreed-upon sign-and-trade deal to send restricted free-agent John Salmons to the Toronto Raptors. All that had to happen to clear the way was for Raptors guard Andre Barrett to clear waivers, creating a roster spot. At that point, Salmons - accepting a 5-year contract worth $23 million - would be sent to the Raptors, with the Sixers receiving a $2 million trade exception good for a calendar year, plus a second-round draft choice. Barrett cleared waivers at 6 o'clock last night. After that... Nothing, other than this from Sixers president and general manager Billy King, in an e-mail response: "At this time, there is no trade to announce." He would not elaborate. No one from either team was saying whether the trade was off or delayed, or what the factors might be. Joel Bell, Salmons' agent, could not be reached for comment. Salmons had weighed offers from the Phoenix Suns (5 years, $22 million) and the Raptors, but the Suns yesterday signed free-agent guard Marcus Banks to a 5-year deal worth $21 million. A source indicated that the Sixers do not plan to offer Salmons, a 4-year veteran, a new contract.</div> Source
So basically Salmons won't be traded to Toronto? I'm not really that upset to tell you the truth, considering we were basically getting crap in the deal. The best case scenario is for us to try and find another team interested in Salmons, and maybe do a sign and trade that lets us get a player in return. If not, I'd hate to lose him for nothing, so I guess maybe we could re-sign him for a 1 or 2 year deal.
King has already put us in a whole as far as finding a trade for Salmons in which we could get equal value in return; by saying, we will not offer Salmons a new contract. It is like trying to sell something for a certain price, while everyone else knows you are just trying to get rid of it, and will eventually drop the price.
Hmmmm............This sounds familiar. Anyone remember Steve Hunter? When Billy King tried to trade him last season for 2 2nd round picks? Hmmmmm..........
Well I have a theory pertaining this particular "move". It simply doesn't make sense why Salmons would rescind the offer, that he wanted, from a team like the Raptors where he would get playing time. Let's face it, his only other offer was to join the Suns and they used most of their cap space signing Marcus Banks. A sub-par player like John Salmons simply doesn't turned down money just below the MLE, it doesn't make any sense. Between the Indiana-Atlanta trade where Atlanta got rid of Harrington for virtually nothing it makes me believe that Billy King has something else up his sleeve. Whether it's a three way trade involving the Hawks, Raptors, and 76ers or a two way trade between the 76ers and the Clippers, I believe Salmons will be moved yet again to a different team. The Hawks have made space to take on Iverson and Samuel Dalembert in exchange for players such as Marvin Williams, Josh Childress, and Josh Smith. Billy Knight probably told Billy King that the only way the 76ers can get Marvin Williams would be to include Dalembert, yet the only way the Hawks can get Dalembert would be to move salary. Salmons would then be moved to the Raptors who would send the trade exemption to the Hawks and the second round pick to the 76ers. You also can look at a different trade scenario. Maybe the Clippers are on the verge of making the Livingston deal for Iverson but demand a young point guard in return (ala John Salmons). The Clippers are under the cap so the trade would work, and they can give Salmons his deal he wants. It just seems that Billy King is close to making another trade and why would Salmons go along with this? King probably told Salmons that if a trade wasn't reached and he couldn't find a deal then the 76ers would pay him in the $25 million range. It's a little far-fetched but it simply doesn't make sense to me why Salmons would pass up that offer.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Salmons, a restricted free agent who had been offered a $22 million deal by the Phoenix Suns, turned down a $23 million contract with the Raptors. Both deals were for five seasons. Because the Sixers had rescinded their qualifying offer, Salmons, who played basketball at Plymouth Whitemarsh High and Miami (Fla.), now is an unrestricted free agent. Billy King, the Sixers' president and general manager, was asked yesterday whether there was a possibility that Salmons would return to the team. King said, "Not at this time."</div> Source
http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives...s_close_to_deal yea... salmons got cold feet and i guess changed his mind about toronto. i dont think hes commin to the raps cuz they are closing in on a deal with Fred Jones with the same offer they gave salmons.
