Chris Duhon and Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation joined forces on July 12 to build a Habitat for Humanity home in Duhon’s hometown of Slidell, Louisiana. Duhon, along with support from Coldwell Banker, sponsored the Habitat for Humanity home with the East St. Tammany Habitat for Humanity affiliate as part of Habitat’s hurricane recovery program, Operation Home Delivery which aids victims of Hurricane Katrina.

“Chris did a lot to help after the hurricane hit and severely impacted his hometown,” said Jim Gillespie, president and chief executive officer of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation. “As an NBA star, Chris has the platform to raise awareness for Habitat for Humanity and the continued need for funding in hurricane affected areas. We are delighted to help in any way we can.”

The recipient of Duhon’s sponsored home was Tasha Smith, a 29-year-old single mom with a 15-month-old son.

“It’s important for people to understand that there is still a great need for affordable housing in the hurricane-affected areas,” said Chris Clarke, senior vice president of Habitat for Humanity International.

Almost immediately after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast last year, the Bulls guard responded by launching his own Hurricane Relief Fund through his Stand Tall Foundation. Duhon, along with assistance from the Chicago Bulls, began collecting financial donations and worked quickly with his mother, Vivian Harper, to organize emergency supply drives in Chicago, Northbrook and Lisle, Ill. The three drives resulted in more than 3,300 boxes of items to provide immediate relief to the victims. To date, more than $400,000 has been raised to lend support to the town.

“The hurricane destroyed my high school and impacted so many of my family and friends,” Duhon said. “I want to do what I can to help. I’ve donated money; I’m running two summer basketball camps as fundraisers and have talked to so many about the continued need for assistance in Slidell and all of the Gulf Coast. I am appreciative that Coldwell Banker has joined us in the ongoing process of rebuilding these devastated areas."</div>

Chris Duhon seems like a really good guy and is a great role model for a lot of kids. Athletes who help out in the community are the ones that I respect the most because it shows they aren't just greedy and selfish like other professional athletes.

It is unfortunate he isn't a massive superstar where he could be more of a role model if this was well known and publicised a lot more (atleast on the national media, I don't know what it is like in the Chicago and NO media)

He was on Cold Pizza talking about the work he is doing in New Orleans. But you are right that he would be getting more publicity if he were a superstar.

duhon is a saint. A good man that kids should look up to. He gets paid basically nothing and is willing to donate his time to charity. Maybe politics will be in his future.

    President Duhon?
