<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Indiana Pacers are on the verge of finalizing a deal with the Mavericks for veteran point guard Darrell Armstrong in a sign-and-trade deal, according to people with knowledge of the situation. According to the Indianapolis Star, the Pacers will give up guard Anthony Johnson in the deal, while also receiving Mavericks forward Josh Powell. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Rawle Marshall will also be included from the Mavericks. The deal is pending league approval, which could happen as early as Monday. Johnson, who spent three seasons with the Pacers, was a steady contributor despite roles that ranged from third-string point guard to starter. He averaged 20.0 points, 5.2 assists and 5.0 rebounds while outplaying New Jersey's Jason Kidd in the Pacers' six-game, first-round playoff loss last season. Trading Johnson, who said the team's "culture has to change" at the end of last season, avoids a point guard controversy with Jamaal Tinsley. Pacers president Larry Bird said Tinsley is "as good as you're going to get" if he is healthy in his season-ending news conference. Tinsley has battled injuries each of the past three seasons. Sarunas Jasikevicius is also a candidate to be traded in the Pacers' crowded backcourt. Rookie James White and newly acquired Marquis Daniels can also play point guard. The acquisition of Armstrong, a 13-year veteran, would give the Pacers a veteran voice in the locker room. He has averaged 10.1 points and 4.4 assists in his career. Powell, a rookie last season who went undrafted in 2003, averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds in 37 games last season. This is the second offseason trade for the Pacers, who sent Croshere to Dallas for Daniels. Shooting guard Fred Jones could be the next Pacer traded. The Toronto Star reported today that Jones is headed to the Raptors. The deal could be finalized in the next couple of days</div> Source
Anthony Johnson is a solid backup Point guard. He should be a great fit with this team if he stays healthy the whole season. But I don't understand why we gave up Rawle Marshall. He's a poor man's Marquis Daniels and put some decent numbers in the Summer league. The Mavs have really been getting screwed by the Pacers this off season..
Hmm I don't know why Indiana is doing this, they are getting younger, faster, and more athletic though. I thought Anthony Johnson was a great fit for them last year, especially when Jamaal Tinsley went down, you never know he might go down again. Johnson was pretty good in the playoffs, too. 40 points in game 6 against the Nets.
Dallas is having a great offseason so far. I guess they plan to use the backcourt combo of Devin Harris and Jason Terry a lot next season. The Mavs didn't give up anything valuable in this deal to land Johnson. I know Rawle Marshall had some upside, but players like him are a dime a dozen in the league.
Johnson did well when he got minutes in Indiana. He probably won't get a chance to start unless injuries in Dallas. But, he is mainly a good off the bench player, and if injuries come, he is able to start.
The Mavs just pulled in a huge steal for a role player, if you get what I am saying. I mean, the Mavericks didn't trade anything away to get him at all. Rawle Marshall had a tad bit of upside, but he isn't going to be able to show it.

They may not be getting equal value, but hey, it's better than nothing. If they couldn't come to an agreement with Dallas, then Johnson could just sign there, and Indy would be left with nothing. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting 50:</div><div class="quote_post">The Mavs just pulled in a huge steal for a role player, if you get what I am saying. What would you call it if they just signed him without giving up a thing? Grand theft point guard?

When they reported it on the radio here, they said Johnson was a FA...which made sense because that's the only way I see this deal making sense for Indy. Now that you've corrected me, I agree that this is a steal for Dallas.
Indiana are making room for Al Harrington's deal, which is why they've rescinded Fred Jones' qualifying offer too.
Combining both deals, its basically Daniels/Armstrong/Marshall/Powell for Croshere/Johnson. Drafting Ager and getting Buckner really seems to have triggered these trades as we relieved the log jam at the 2/3 positions and filling our voids. Unless Ager pans out better than Daniels, I doubt if we've gotten enough back from these trades.
You know I'm upset that Armstrong has left us, btu happy we have Johsnon now. great hustler who will fit PERFECTLY in dallas' offense. But I'm stil stunned armstrong is gone, i thought for sure he wouldve retired after going to the finals. Good luck indiana because armstrong will retire once this is all official. and in a year hw'll come and coach under Avery. who wants to place bets? lol
This is a great trade for Mavs. Johnson is pretty good and trading and old Armstrong who really wasn't used and two other sucky players for 1 good player..is a very good deal for them
Definitely a good trade for the Mavs. Like shape said, its obvious that Terry will be seeing a lot of time at shooting guard this year. He is also a great insurance policy in case either of them go down with an injury. So far, we have had a great offseason.
No Mike James, so we got out and score one of the great vetren`s in the league with AJ. He`ll be a perfect backup for Jet.
