wayne embry pulled off deal before colangelo's arrival for cap room. the deal went down like this jalen rose, denver's first rounder (renaldo balkman) for antonio davis which really meant we traded for cap room. although, in july the deal looks like this- j.rose+renaldo balkman for anthony parker + fred jones + garbosa. today its time to sing the praises of wayne embry for his forward looking genius.

It's true ... What GM's are starting to realize is any pick that's 20-30's in a draft year that's not very deep is just guaranteed money you have to throw a player. So getting rid of that helped us as well.

That was a pretty great trade. Anything that clears cap space is good in my books.

Here are a few obvious ones:

-Rights to Vince Carter plus cash for Rights to Antawn Jamison

-Rights to Jonathan Bender for Antonio Davis

The Vince Carter for Antawn trade was probably the best- it put us on the map, got us into the postseason.

In addition to the VC and AD trades, how bout Kevin Willis for Keon Clark? Wow that guy was amazing for his first year and a half with the Raps. He gave us alot more than I expected. Too bad he's a pothead.

True, the AD for Rose deal was magnificent but I'll go on record and say that the Haffa for Humphries & Whaley will also turn out to be an amazing deal for the Raptors. Obviously Whaley won't contribute anything at all considering he's been waived already, but Humphries' size and skill that has yet to been seen on a professional level, willl flourish in this new change of scenery here in Toronto. Just you wait and see fellas. [IMG]

This isn't the best deal in Raptors history. It's great that Toronto got cap space and financial flexibility with Davis’ expiring contract, but how can you rate this move higher than trading Antawn Jamison for Vince Carter, or trading Antonio Davis for Jonathan Bender? Maybe you can make an argument for selecting Chris Bosh as the best move in history although it might be a bit premature. Toronto put their free cap space to good use signing Fred Jones, and a few of the players from overseas who, I must admit, no very little about. Still, they should be solid role players, I guess. And deception, there’s little justification for giving up the 20th pick regardless of what the Knicks did with it. If the Raptors had possession of the 20th pick and selected someone like Rajon Rondo or Marcus Williams, two point guards with all-star potential, it would have been much better for the franchise. This might have meant Charlie Villanueva could have remained a Raptor. The fact of the matter is, Colangelo isn’t Isiah Thomas and likely wouldn’t have selected Balkman with the 20th pick so even though the Knicks wasted it (if you want to look at it like that), the pick could have been a valuable asset to use for the future, so, to me, that automatically eliminates the Jalen Rose/Antonio Davis trade as one of “the best deals in Raptors history”.

Trading for the draft rights of Vince Carter was probably the best move in franchise history. Vince Carter took the Raptors to new heights (second round), which still have never been reached after his departure. We also have to remember the excitement and marketability he brought to Canada. I’m sure he was the reason why many people decided to Raptor fans in the first place. I know if I was a young guy living in Canada and saw an exciting player like Vince Carter, I would definitely become a Raptor fan. And who knows, if they selected someone like Jamison instead and struggled, the Raptors could have taken the Vancouver route and move somewhere else. Sure, Carter did betray the team at the end during their rougher times and he should have had the decency to help them out after signing him to such a lucrative deal, but you can’t forget his impact he had on the team. Period. The fact that he is the only Raptor who has a fighting chance to have his jersey retired (well, at least it’s being discussed by members on this forum) proves his impact on the franchise.

I give credit to wayne for not being gun shy and pulling the trigger on that trade. I think it also ensured we got colangelo because he liked the fact that he was taking over a team who had cap space. However i will just say that some sources say Rob Babcock had that trade on a the table for a while, however he was just waiting till it got closer to the deadline before he made the move.

Also its too early to tell how those free agent pick ups went. if we hadn't made that trade we could of had Marcus Williams. And just got rid of Jalen's contract this year.

i think we can snatch Garnett from Twolves, we have a buddy tht works for them - Babcock. if only Mchale could just let babcock be General manager for a day.

we can convince babcock with this trade

    Kevin Garnett

    for

    Sow
    humphries
    Nesterovic
    2 2nd round picks

for sure this will be the best deal in Raptors History!!! lmao

this trade has alot wait and see... intangibles cause renaldo balkman might be a ron artest clone and we don't know how parker or garbosa will fare in the nba, plus we don't how well fred jones will adjust to more minutes and the uptempo offense. however, i like the potential of the three dudes we signed.

[IMG], true, but I read an article, he's just playing golf and smoking weed now. He just plain isn't a dude(despite the talent) for the NBA. He's just one of thsoe guys who got money and is set for life now.

I think it was a good trade not for the reasons you mentioned, but because it created an ideal environment to lure Colangelo to Toronto.

Had Colangelo not come to Toronto the deal would've been mediocre. With Denver's pick we could've snagged Marcus Williams. With the Jalen's contract ending just a year later, we could've made a splash in a much better free agent market. And also, we could've used Rose's services for another year (assuming he would still play like how he did before leaving the team, i.e. deferring to Bosh, playing within the flow of the game, etc)
