All you guys that hated the Murphy for Harrington swap, you got your wish. One year year of Murph's awful defense, awful shooting %, chucking up any shot that comes his way and getting shot after shot swatted in his face.

I think you're massively underrating Murphy. Is he the ideal prototype at the 4, no, probably not... but positions on a basketball team are only relevant as they apply to the team's style of play. Murphy'll be fine, because he's reliable, which can't be said for any other player on the team(except perhaps Diogu).

I really wanted Diogu to get the starting job, but with Murphy still here and Monty still coach, he won't see much minutes.

Maybe Ike Diogu will start nonetheless. I like Murphy off the bench anyway, as long as he doesn't try to press. Having Harrington/Dunleavy/Ike on the same team doesn't make much sense unless Harrington's contract is short. Having guys that can play multiple positions off the bench is nice, but anytime we have a guy that doesn't have a true position playing something in the starting rotation, it just doesn't fit well in terms of roles. If there's some magical trade that can undo Foyle/Murphy/Dunleavy's deals and we add actual starters, I'd be happy. SF needs to have skill of a guard, PF/C should ideally be interchangeable on defense, with the PF being slightly more versatile on the perimeter on offense.

JRich is a 2 and he doesn't even have the skills of a guard. He's a forward playing a guard's position. In college that's what he was, and I know they've tried to work with him every year (and god-bless for all the hard work he's put in) to convert him into a guard but he'll never have the natural ball-handling or passing skills of a guard.

I've wondered if JRich could hold up at the SF position. That'd really create some versatile match-up ideas with Baron, Monta, and JRich at the 1,2,3

JRich is maybe 6'5 at the most and that would create mis matches on the defensive end for the Warriors.

Although Murphy isn't the ideal PF, atleast in many of your eyes, he does bring you consistency night in and night out. He is quite possibly our best rebounder, he is pretty consistent from long range and can take a bigger defender off the dribble. He would be a lot more effective if he developed an inside game, hopefully it will come in time. But I am liking the Diogu/Murphy combo as they both give you different things.

I've definately considered this -- NBA.com has JRich listed at 6'6", still pretty short for a SF but it's only a few inches. He's tough, athletic, and can obviously jump out the gym to block shots. I'm not saying he can lock down a big post-up guy, but he could guard SFs like T-Mac or Peja or Stephen Jackson or Eddie Jones or Bruce Bowen or Caron Butler. I mean Richard Jefferson is listed at 6'7" and he's tabbed as a forward.

I'm not saying he wouldn't have his problems there but let's not pretend like Dunleavy is lockin fools down at the SF position lol [IMG]

I'd say hes more like 6'4.5, which you wouldnt know when he plays at SG because of his athleticism and wingspan but can you imagine him going against Rashard Lewis? Lamar Odom? Tracy McGrady? He wouldnt stand a chance. I'd say Dunleavy is a better defender than J-Rich, hes not a lockdown player by any means but he draws a ton of offensive fouls and hes extremely lanky, one thing the Warriors did a nice job of was containing superstar swingmen and that was mostly due to Dun/Pietrus.

Don't forget Marion and Ron Artest BJM. I don't think J-Rich would be suited for SF unless your playing small ball.

It could work some, but I think there's a reason why undersized forward-type guys like Desmond Mason, Bonzi Wells, and Reuben Patterson can get away with small forward. It's probably because they are closer to small forward size than Jason Richardson. Jrich is reportedly 6'4 but with long arms. But he also gets murdered in the post by guys like Carmelo Anthony who is 6'8 and has some weight on Richardson, and more strength.

I think part of the reason why Jrich works so well as a guard is he's probably one of the strongest at that position while up in the air and any time he can stop on a dime and jump shoot right over guys or finish with bodies flying into him. He can't however, use that same strength to hold guys who are larger, stronger than him with a mean post game. All the best small forwards in the league have post game, even pure shooter types like Peja Stojakavic so I bet this makes Richardson a complete defensive liability.

But Richardson does have his good moments on defense. I saw him play against James Posey and Lebron James at shooting guard and I think he did okay. I think it's Dunleavy's job to handle the tall guys like T'mac (closer to 6'9) or Rashard Lewis/Lamar Odom (6'10) instead of Jrich. That's a 4 or more inches worth of height discrepancy with Jrich and other forwards. Plus we have to expect the long wingspan of those top forwards will rival Jrich's long wingspan.

We'll have to figure out this small forward situation later, but I hope we either find something good for Murphy or we keep him as a bench guy to compliment Ike Diogu.

Definitely. I remember Carmelo Anthony kicked his ass in the post. Dunleavy is a smart help defender, but probably is as good at Richardson playing alone. I've actually seen Dunleavy attempt to block more shots than Troy Murphy. It doesn't work if only one player defends the rim. Guys like Baron/Jrich/Dunleavy all have to help out poor Foyle because Murphy won't do the defensive work.

Standing reach is another thing though, right? [IMG]

It's like with Ike Diogu being 6'8 with two inch thick soles and him not even having to jump that high and dunk the ball.

Or that Saer Sene guy or that one Iranian that can touch the basket standing up. I think even Yao Ming can do it, even though he's got shorter than 7'6 wingspan.

Going back to Murphy though. I thought he was great before his big contract. But damn, he's gotten kind of lazy and less aggressive on D. It's like he's become Carlos Boozer. Plus, I don't like Murphy moving further away from the basket. Who cares if he makes a three point shot, it doesn't help if it doesn't go in at a high rate like his '04 year.

Dunleavy is not as bad of a defender as people make him out to be. Sure, he isn't as athletic as most of the guys he guards but he is smarter than most of them. He has good foot work and takes good angles. I think he isn't as big of a liability as other players on the team on Defense. His length alone gives the offensive players trouble.

I remember Dunleavy used to get burned behind the arc or trying to stay in front, but the other Warriors defenders weren't so hot either. Apparently Claxton at point, washed up Robinson at PF, and contract year Dampier managed to play some very tight D (Crobb was great against Jermaine O'neil, Dampier was great against Shaq). Richardson + Dun were questionable in '03 in terms of consistency and defense. I liked Dun's defensive improvement in '04 and '05 where he seemed to get stronger physically in his legs, but '05 he just lost his shooting completely. As if he wasn't a questionable enough shooter for all the times he was missing open twos and threes and airballing an occasional free throw shot or wide open shot. I can see why lots of people don't like Dunleavy because shooting was supposed to be his biggest asset and he's not quick enough or strong enough to take advantage of his ballhandling or his size near the rim. But he does pass well and make the smart move to help out... too bad there is nobody to go to inside the paint, but around the arc and there's no defensive stoppers on this team anymore. There's nobody inside the paint that wants the ball and few guys that make the extra pass especially without a true point guard like Derek Fisher (joking)!

More and more I think I want guys like '03 Clif Robinson and Claxton back. We got rid of Fisher, now hopefully we can find a good trade with Murphy before we bench Murphy. Buy low sell high type of deal. All-star break we might have something good going if we don't rush out Ike into starter just yet. We need Murphy to keep posting double doubles and just statwhore his way into a team that wants him.

Murphy is fun to watch when he plays against guys like Duncan. I love when Murphy does his little jab step and takes Duncan to the rack. That is impressive even if it is agains the not so fleet of foot Duncan on the perimeter...

I don't know what to say other than Jrich has some weird dimensions, but that's good for a basketball type body, especially when undersized. Look at Elton Brand, D-wade, or Ben Wallace. Those guys play pretty big as does Jrich.

Also, a lot of people know I'm a big Tim Duncan fan because he illustrates that guy not as athletic as Amare Stoudamire or Jermaine O'neil can still be a huge factor on both ends because of solid footwork, nice frame, good decision-making, great strength/finesse and team fundamentals. He makes it easy for Gms to build around. I was hoping Troy Murphy could pick up some offensive skills from Duncan and maybe some from Nowitzki, but all he's mastered is the turn around jumper using more fakes and jab steps and the occasional drive almost always going left or going right and switching over to his left hand.... which tends to stop the ball and he's not as accurate shooting and he's not a good floor awareness type guy to pass the ball when another guy is open. Plus he's not the type who can use their body to create space rather than shy away from contact. I think Murphy just isn't that strong of a player or that inviting of contact as a pure shooter. The shooter types tend to be really soft. It's too bad because Murphy is a nice player that improves one thing every year, but his upside was very limited and we all knew that. The nice thing is we expected Murphy to be some what of a Todd Fuller type player and he ended up being pretty good in his rookie and sophmore years when used as a midrange set shooter straight from the elbow. Then after that contract, it's like his defensive ability and his field goal % suffered as he grew further away from the painted area.

I wish Murphy could be more center-like defensively and in the painted area. He's got some nice ballhandling and shooting skills to play power forward, but lacks a lot of things including ambidexterity and the willingess to play like a big player.
