Is Doc Rivers the right coach for the C's? We've a young bunch with not a great deal of vet leadersip (PP is great, but does he always lead by example on the crt?). Can Doc teach these guys how to play and compete for 82 at NBA level? I can see guys like GG being amazingly good in short bursts, but not the entire season. I reckon we need a coach who is teacher. Maybe a college type coach who is used to taking a bunch of talented guys from different schools (countries even) and teach them to play as a team consistently. Can Doc do this? Who thinks what?
I think just about any coach can do better. The one thing he may be good for is developing the young talent. But there are better. And his in-game coaching is horrible.
As a tactician, he's simply one of the worst. I think he's better for putting together a team that has a little more cohesion than we do so far. When he was Coach of the Year with the Magic, he had a unit that wasn't that young, wasn't totally inexperienced, and had players that liked each other's company. Not to mention a point guard with some brains, and a real vet. That said, this team has none of those things. West is a remarkable athlete, but he still needs an awful lot of seasoning. Everyone else is either not a key player, too young, or just isn't that good. All told, this team needs a defensive core, a point guard with some time under his belt, and some talented veterans who might be able to have a breakout game once in a while. The funniest thing about Doc's award is that he earned it by winning 41 games. Not the least bit notable, but it was the Magic, so everyone figured it was as good as they can be. The man won Coach of the Year for being subpar, and he's excelled at it ever since.
