I'm confused as to what exactly 82games.com is trying to tell me. In the "PER difference" part of the chart (which is in blue). Are they saying Lebron has better defense than Kobe? I doubt this, although I'm not sure if I am reading this chart properly. Here's the link:

Because I have said before: Kobe's PER plus his 1st team defense makes him the best right now (and he also does this all in the West in a very complex offense).

[IMG] That was sort of cute (Heh, whatever). Anyway, I appreciate any real answers.

I'm not totally sure how the Opponent PER number is calculated. I think it might be the average PER of the opposing positions a player might guard (SG and SF, for instance), while that player is on the court. 12.6 for LeBron does seem very low. If you go into his player page, and click "By Position" tab, it shows he played almost exclusively at SF, and the opposing SF during that time had a 14.6 PER during that time. So, how his overall Opponent PER goes to 12.6, I don't know.

I actually emailed the site a while back to clarify that particular stat, but I never got a response.

Even if that number is accurate, I wouldn't take it to be the sole measure of a player's defensive worth. It's more a measure of individual, man-to-man defense, but even in that respect it doesn't take into account defensive switches that regularly occur throughout the game.

Thanks for the post, Kobe still achieves 28 PER and great defense just like I thought.

I give no credibility to 82games.com, they rely COMPLETELY on statistics to determine everything- which basically screams a bunch of "wanna be sport fan geeks" to me.

They also put the players salary into consideration to see who comes as a better bargain, and then factor that into how good the player is. While LeBron is obviously a better bargain than the entire league (cause he's still on that rookie contract) that shouldn't be a factor in determining how good of a player he is.

Interesting point, I just wanted to understand some of their charts because they are confusing. Although, intangibles are used too much in arguements.
