Bergen Record - League sources have told Steve Adamek of the Bergen Record, the 76ers have approached the Knicks about a trade for Chris Webber, but weren't satisfied with Isiah Thomas' offer.

Quentin Richardson, who has $33.8 million over four seasons left on his contract and Maurice Taylor, whose $9.75 million contract expires after this season, were the starting points of the Knicks' offer.

Because of Webber's hefty salary, the Knicks would have to send additional pieces to Philadelphia

I heard this on another forum, but that move wouldn't be too bad considering Webber's contract ends a year after Taylor's. Plus we would get rid of Q-Rich's contract. Webber would make us great on the boards and give us a smart big man who can shoot from the perimeter.

They need to add Jerome James and it will work out fine. The Knicks PPG production would increase as well, so I like this trade idea.

Getting a guy like Chris Webber who's contract isn't long term now and can do some dirty work down-low like get rebounds would be nice.

Webber will give the Knicks an inside presence. The guy can rebound, has a descent outside shot, and is a good passer. He can complement Marbury and Francis' style.

Call me crazy but Chris Webber will make a bigger impact than Q-Rich, Jerome James, and Maurice Taylor. A no brainer for the Knicks which is why Philly didn't want to do it.

Yes it doesn't help the Knicks luxury tax, but this is Isiah's year to prove himself, and in his position you rather take your chances with Webber and let the next GM clean up the mess if he's fired.

Webber is way past his old, all-star self. He won't give the Knicks much, other than some mid-range scoring and 6-8 rebounds.

I just don't get it...the Knicks want ANOTHER aging guy with bad knees?

That's a lot more than what the players the Knicks are giving up will produce. And he's got a contract year coming up (2 more yrs) so he's gonna play extra hard like Tim Thomas to try and get a decent deal.

    Sure, it's more, but:

    a) He had a much less selfish supporting cast in Philly, which means he won't be getting the ball as much.
[IMG] You can't rely on him too much because of his injury problems.
    c) From what I understand, the Knicks want a fast break team this season. Webber excells in a half-court set.
    d) He'd probably get less minutes, because the Knicks have much more depth at the big men positions that Philly.
    e) In two years, Webber will be 35, with injury problems. I don't think he'll be getting a big contract either way.

The Knicks can get his production from Q and Maurice Taylor, maybe with a little less rebounds. Talyor's contract expires after this year, which takes 10 million dollars off their cap. Then, they can trade Q for another expiring contract and a 1st round pick. I think that at least 15 million dollars off the cap (if Q gets traded) + a first round pick next year is better than an aging former star with bad knees.

The Knicks probably won't be competing this season or the next for the playoffs, so they're better off getting pieces for the future in instead of trading for guys like Webber.
