<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Voodoo Child:</div><div class="quote_post">Actually, AKIRA, they go back a lot further than the mid to late 90's. They started the band in 1979 (going by the name "Anthym" and then later "What Is This?") and then later inked their first record deal in 1983. Also, punk-funk is not p-funk, not even remotely. P-Funk is Parliament-Funkadelic, arguably the Chili's biggest influence in the 80's. The reason I didn't label them with a specific 'genre' was because they've experienced so many changes as a band. To summarize their history as briefly as possible, they started off as a groove-heavy funk rock band, but on June 27, 1988, guitarist and the creator of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose, leading drummer Jack Irons (more recently known for his work with Pearl Jam) to quit the band, and when they replaced the two with John Frusciante and Chad Smith, their sound changed dramatically, becoming far more melodic and centering around simpler bass lines. Up to that point, Kiedis' vocals were also mostly just spoken, but when the new members came to the band, he started to sing more and do a lot more 'rapping'. Then when Frusciante left the band in 1992, they replaced him with Dave Navarro, who brought a more psychadelic sound to the band, and at that point, Kiedis really started to just focus on singing rather than rapping. Frusciante then rejoined the band in 1999 with a minimalistic approach and gave them the sound they have today.</div> Yeah, i think i meant to say mid to late 80's, but the other info you have of them is really interesting, i never knew that>
