Pau Gasol, Spain?s leading scorer and rebounder, has a partial fracture in his left foot and will not play in the FIBA world championships gold medal game against Greece on Sunday night, according to team officials.

Commercial Appeal - Pau Gasol will require surgery for the partial fracture in his left foot that occurred during Friday's semifinals and he is expected to miss up to three months.

Gasol's injury was confirmed in a statement released by the Spanish Basketball Federation.

"The player is not supporting any weight on the injured foot. The national team's medical services has submitted to his club (Memphis) a medical report, as well as the exam results, so they can evaluate the therapeutic steps to be taken," the release said.

Gasol will undergo surgery following an examination by the team's doctor.

"Is this the same thing that happened two years ago?," Grizzlies coach Mike Fratello said Saturday.

"You have to get him back and let our people look at him." [READ]</div>

To hell with Spain's chances of winning a gold medal, there goes the Grizzlies' season. Who are they going to start at the four now, Hakim Warrick? What a joke that would be.

    PF - Hakim Warrick/Lawrence Roberts/Alexander Johnson
    C - Jake Tsakalidis/Stromile Swift

I'd be surprised if they had a 25% winning percentage when Gasol comes back with that sorry frontline.

Damn, Spain can ball well even without Pau. So much for Greece. I can't believe we gave up 101 points to them.

My condolences to the Grizz fans, that has always been a huge fear of mine as a Mavericks fan when Dirk plays overseas. Although you can't stop them, I would put a clause in their contract that if they got seriously hurt in international play their contract could be voided. That way, maybe they would think twice about going over there to play

And what is the difference with someone who plays for team USA? Should they put such a clause in their contracts too?

I think this injury will put Gay in drivers seat for ROY now that he has to carry the load for a month or two, giving him precious experience that will help him during the year. He's the next big thing after Paul for the Young guys IMO [IMG]

Players would never agree to that.
