Mavs' assistant joins Nelson's staff

    Mavericks assistant coach Larry Riley has accepted a multiyear contract to be the No. 1 assistant for new Golden State Warriors coach Don Nelson.
    Riley signed the deal Friday. It marks a significant promotion from the No. 3 assistant position he had on Avery Johnson's staff.
    "It's just such an advancement for me that it was something I felt I needed to do," Riley said. "But the last six years in Dallas have been great. Working with Nellie and Avery couldn't have been a better experience."

    This does not sound good for Mario Ellie. I hope he stays at least as the #2 coach because I like the idea of grooming him like Nelson groomed Avery...

    I think Elie will get his shot elsewhere. It's pretty clear he's been passed over.

    From what I understand Rielly is a scout more than a coach.

    Keith Smart didn't go anywhere, so maybe Elie will stick around.

    BTW anyone think Don Nelson looks like Boris Yeltsin?

    The only one getting groomed is Riley if he's signed on to be #1. Sorry Smart and Elie. I really like those guys but if its Nellie, then its Nellie's way, otherwise why do it? In fact, that may have been one of the problems for Monty, he did not get to work with his staff, I think Elie and Smart were holdovers and picked by Mully.

    We may lose Elie and Smart and they may become great coaches elsewhere but I'm willing to pay that price to get a coach like Nellie.
