<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Seems there is one more thing for Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo to do this summer.

Having remade his team from almost top to bottom, Colangelo now has to decide what ? if anything ? to do with T.J. Ford.

It's obvious to anyone paying close attention to the team that Colangelo and Ford's representatives have already begun discussions on a contract extension for the young point guard but the Raptors have only until Halloween to get something done.

How much would you pay for Ford?

Does five years and $30 million sound like too much for a guy who's to earn about $3 million this year?

How about four years and $22 million with a team option on the fifth year?

Does locking up a young point guard for the foreseeable future make sense, especially a young guard without a lot of NBA miles on him but one who missed a season and a half with a neck injury?

Ford's salary on any extension really doesn't matter cap-wise because Toronto is going to be over the cap for years to come and the only troublesome number will be the tax threshold ? which no one can accurately predict ? so the dollars really aren't a concern.

The only thing that matters if whether the Raptors think Ford is their point guard for the long term. Judging from what I know of the kid, and from what people tell me about him, it makes perfect sense to lock him up.

He is the quickest guard this team has ever had and arguably the best pure point guard the franchise has ever employed so why not get him under contract for as long as possible.</div>

    Story

cant say that would be a bad thing

I think you wait for the first couple of weeks of the season before you actually sign him. You'll have assurance that the dude can play well with this team, and you'll get him for less money than he would have eventually commanded.

The opposite could happen though, the team could go 12-5 or something crazy and give Ford a bargaining chip.

Wait, let me prove myself wrong. 1st, the Raptors will never go 12-5 in the first 17 games. 2nd, unless the winning is completely attributed to Ford it shouldn't bolster his value too much.

I agree that it is better to see the guy play with the team, and then determine how to pay him. If he gets the team to play great, he deserves better money. If the team doesn't play well with him, you can give him a more reasonable amount.

just another reason why we got ripped on the TJ Ford trade. CV31 is under his rookie contract for at least 3 more years. Secondly if we don't re-sign ford to a long term deal, the trade makes us look like abosolute idiots for trading for a player who we keep for only one year. Therefore its imperative we re-sign ford, something surely ford and his agent both know and will no doubt use as a barganing chip. This will no doubt lead to us over paying for his services.

I don't think we can do that. Isn't there something that prohibits players from signing extensions in the middle of the season? Besides, I wouldn't want Ford to "play for a contract", a la Mike James. Best to settle the deal now and let Ford enter the season with no reason to do things that he normally wouldn't. One less worry.

I'm not getting the NHL stuff, I haven't been reading up about it?

    Really long contracts or something?

Didn't a pitcher in Baseball for the Yankees get a 10 year deal or something?

He's 25 and the Islanders signed him to a 15 year deal. He's getting guaranteed money until he's 40!

Pretty sure the thing with that is the Islanders can place him on waivers anytime they want though .. that pretty much voids his contract whenever they like ... the new CBA not so player friendly. Maybe there's something else to that ? I can't say i know everything about the situation as i'm not much of a puck head

We can't extend him in the middle of the season, but we can until Oct 31. Which is a month and a half from now.

He is not on a two way contract...fringe players sign 2 way contracts that will pay considerable more money if they stick with the nhl club, if they get sent to the minors, they make less...thats not the case for DiPietro. IF the islanders put him on waivers and nobody takes him (who would) then he would carry his same contract to the ahl. He is gettin that money unless he retires.

15 year deals make no sense to anyone.
    1. If you are the athlete, the only way you sign one is if you are getting overpaid, and only care about money. If you sign a contract for good money today, don't mean its gonna be good money in 8 years....inflation boys and girls. Not to mention....what if the team stinks for years.

    2. If you are the owner/gm, the only way you sign someone to a 15 year deal if it gives you a rock bottom price for an up and coming star of immense integrity. If you just signed a 15 year deal for over 4.5 a year...where is the drive to do well, u just set urself for life.

lol, this is offtopic, but whatever...

I think the Islander's owners are counting on the cap going up over time (which it is almost certain to do). On a yearly basis, Dipietro could end up being overpaid during his prime. However, I'm skeptical about his ability to live up to his potential, as he's had the oppurtunity for a few years now and has yet to show much of anything. Also$, I really don't understand why you pay him until he's 40. That makes no sense at all. You'd think they'd have learned from signing Yashin for 10 years.
