Derek Fisher leaving is the only significant roster change, after several Warriors admitted they were expecting an overhaul, but Chris Mullin still managed to make his team eight to 10 wins better. At least that's the bump I expect from Don Nelson's return as coach, similar to what Phil Jackson's return did for last season's Lakers, which is why I'm betting on the Warriors to halt the league's longest playoff drought even without a drastic personnel makeover. Don't get me wrong. I realize these guys have plenty of holes and obviously won't be getting better defensively under the new coach. But there's talent in the Bay Area, far more talent than Nelson started with in Dallas and plenty of pieces to mix and match with lineups and run, run, run. As Nellie himself said the other day: "There's a lot of positives here and many of them happen to be smaller players."</div> Source
All in all I think we did a good job. A move for Matt Barnes would be welcome to me. I think we need a good rebounding guard.
It'd be great if everyone of the warriors could rebound and box out if needed, but we also need to play defense to make stops, not be so slow on transition D so we can stick around on offense and crash the boards, and (offense) post up on the block so we can get those close rebounds. We need a guy like Brand, Danny Fortson, Dampier, Randolph, or Ben Wallace that will do battle in the paint and grab those offensive boards. I don't like this crap where we shoot and then run away because guys need a head start to get back on D. I also didn't like how Montgomery would have these guys in there that would shoot without any rebounding under the rim. I don't know if it was Monty's or Derek Fisher's fault, but I suspect Dfish's the guy who would shoot whenever he felt like it. What we need is a real point guard instinct and I think Baron/Ellis are obviously the better choices for guys who are creative with the ball, can pass, and can move quickly enough to break down opposing defenses rather than just hoist it. Unfortunately, Baron/Ellis do get like Derek Fisher and become a bunch of shooting guards so it could be Mullin's style to get those type of point guard players... I think the Warriors could possibly turn things around. But there has to be some chemistry/consistency between our players or else it's the same thing as last time. We've never seen great chemistry or consistency in our club. I don't know if Nelson can also fix the rebounding, passing, ballhandling, and free throw shooting problem.

My best friend's pappy won't even watch Warriors basketball because he says its not a basketball team. I figure the old timers ought to know what good basketball used to be about everytime the Big O, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Magic Johnson, and others get mentioned over the new stars and role players of today's game. Warriors have to shoot, pass, move, play smart, and most importantly catch. I guess no more Foyle, right?

Foyle must be your man </div> You're right... I should have put ... and brains and hands. I dread Foyle (as a player skillwise). Ever since that injury and big money, Foyle hasn't been the same player. And we might say, since Dampier is no longer here to make Foyle look better in non-contract years, Foyle no longer looks appealing as a starter. He's just nothing more than a shotblocker that doesn't do much else these days. He's not even a top defensive specialist to be making what he's making and that is Mullin's fault for taking that gamble. The Wizard of Oz needs to grant something to our team's centers and small forwards because we keep getting these Dampier/Dunleavy types to start and wind up with backups that don't know the game beyond one or two things. First problem in the last three years we had with those positions was heart, then brains, then courage, and now we need hands, a jump shot, and quickness.
In a way, I think Nelson experimenting with Murphy at center will help, even if the Warriors turn into a donut team. There are only a few dangerous post playersleft that Murphy has to guard, is that really much different than Murphy guarding some of the league's dangerous 4's? Besides, there's always a reason to be optimistic. So let's say we tank miserably. Maybe if we're unlucky enough during the season, we'll tank, get the #1 draft pick, and Greg Oden will declare? Ok, maybe too much of a pipe dream, but we can't be too down, you know? Edit: I posted before I read Nelson's comments in the other thread. I guess I am just a mind reader?
