<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Shawn Kemp's planned workout at the Berto Center never materialized Monday, and it's unlikely the six-time NBA All-Star will receive another invitation from the Bulls.

Kemp experienced travel problems late Sunday night but still arrived in Chicago early Monday morning. Instead of working out with the Bulls, he traveled to his hometown of Elkhart, Ind., to visit an ailing relative.

Kemp, 36, who retired in 2003 after 14 seasons because of weight issues, also missed a planned workout with Dallas earlier this year.

The former dynamic dunker, known as "The Reign Man" in his prime with Seattle, has been trying to interest NBA teams since shedding about 60 pounds in 2005.

The Bulls, who considered Kemp an extreme long shot, have one roster spot to fill before training camp begins Oct. 3. Kemp and coach Scott Skiles have a longstanding relationship, dating to their formative basketball years in Indiana and throughout various meetings during their NBA careers.</div>

At least he missed it for a legitimate reason. It's not like he said to hell with it and just skipped it cause he wanted to.

I don't find it legitimate at all. This is a rare second chance opportunity for Shawn Kemp to make it back to the NBA. If you know you're scheduled to be at training camp on at a certain date and time, then you better be there. He should have been in Chicago by Saturday to avoid any possible delays.

I think visiting an ailing relative is a pretty legit reason to miss a workout. Even if he was getting a second opportunity to come back, family should always come before work in this world.

I agree, family comes first, but this doesn't sound like a family emergency.

Why not visit the relative earlier in the week then or right after you're done
with your workout? From the wording of the article, it sounded like visiting the relative was an after thought, after he missed his scheduled workout.

Probably Kemp's last chance. The family excuse hopefully is true, but Kemp's character has been a question mark throughout his career.

I feel for him if the reason is legit, not many 36 year old's get a second shot especially in the big leagues of the NBA

Kemp has always been, and continues to be, one of the biggest examples of wasted potential to ever have come into the league. This guy was one of the elite stars in the league for so many years even helping the Sonics make it to the finals. He could have had a hall of fame type career if he never got himself involved with the wrong things. Now he’s just a loser with no future because he got high.

Verizon Online is a bi*ch. I moved a couple of weeks ago and was not able to get internet service until spending four hours on the phone with them today.

I assume this will put the kibosh on Kemp's attempts at returning to the NBA. I can't see any more teams wasting time on him.
