Darko is one of the big stories for the Magic going into this season and everyone wants to see how he performs when given a good chunk of minutes and possibly a starting job. By the way he played last season, he seems to be an above average defender and someome who can score if given the oppurtunities. We got Darko for next to nothing and chances are, if he puts up great stats this season he's going to want a lot of money next summer (the summer we are supposedly going to get Vince Carter or some other big free agent). Depending on how much Darko asks for, we may not be able to afford both Milicic and the free agent. Big men are known to get paid a lot (see Nene and Big Ben) so are we going to regret waiting until the end of next season to sign Darko to an extention? We could have inked him this offseason before everyone knew how good he was. That would have been riskier but in the end it would have saved us a lot of money. What are your opinions?
You bring up an extremely valid point. I was actually just thinking about the same thing the other week. I'm surprised that the organization hasn't signed him to an extension right after they saw how he performed at the end of the season. Hopefully we will sign him before the free agent period. I expect them to give him a good contract extension before season's end. Hopefully sooner than later. If Darko comes out and plays extremely well, it's going to make it that much harder to come to a common ground with his contract. The longer we wait, the more money he will be earning. It's still early though, the organization may be waiting for training camp to start, and once training camp is complete they may try to come to an agreement. good to see you back Swish.

I think this is more a matter of Darko's agent. I think he knows that his value at this time is about as low as it can get and that it's definitely going to go up during the season. He's probably told the Magic to wait so that he can give his client a fair deal.

Neither side really negotiated at all, Darko's side holds the negotiating power, not the Magic. If Darko wanted to sign already then he would be signed.
darko will begetting a nene extension...6 years, 60 million, jameers will be 6 years 50 million and dwights will be 2 years, 40 million and when that runs out he will get the 6 years, 150 million (MAX) or in that neighborhood depending on what the CBA (collective bargaining agreement) makes the new max contract worth because their contract with the nba runs out in 3 years
I think it was a bad move to not sign Darko this summer. He will breakout this year and will demand big money also with his potential other teams could be willing to pay more, so he could bolt. But I am really excited to see who we go for in the Free Agency next summer. But first off we need to keep this team intact.
We'll sign the free agent first and sign Darko with bird rights. Ain't no thang. To sign him last season would be an unnecessary risk. Come on, he showed potential, but he also cost us 2 games single handedly. He could be a Kwame. We made the right move, gentlemen.

Yes, it is going to be a big story, but you have to look at the big picture for the whole Magic franchise. We have a very good young core right now with Nelson, Howard and Milicic. I think that the real story is going to be how the Magic are going to keep all three. Honestly, I don't see the franchise doing anything if those three players are not the core. Unless, of course, we choose to rebuild...again.
A recent article in Florida Today dicusses this issue. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Magic and Milicic's agent, Marc Cornstein, have agreed to put off talks on a contract extension until the summer. With an off-the-charts season, Milicic could feasibly demand an $80 million deal similar to the one Anthony signed with Denver. But if he fails to win a prominent role, Milicic could be looking at a deal that pays him little more than the $5.2 million he's due this year. "In my experience in this league, the contract year is about the biggest carrot there is for most guys," Magic coach Brian Hill said. "Certainly that's something that we have in our favor because he has a lot to play for." The Magic could change course and sign Milicic to an extension before Oct. 31, and general manager Otis Smith admitted the organization discusses the matter almost daily. Waiting until the summer, when Milicic will be a restricted free agent, could be a costly gamble for the Magic. For now, Smith said the feeling is to let Milicic play out this season and establish his true worth. "Let's see what he is instead of what we think he's going to be," Smith said. "You're trying to get the best Darko you can get out there on the floor and be fair to everybody. By doing it this way, we're giving the kid a chance to get his value up and we have a chance to truly evaluate him." Milicic is usually a man of few words, and to his credit he has said his focus is more on helping the Magic get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2003 than it is a new contract. He doesn't feel pressure to perform because he has so much riding on this season. "I'm just going to give my best and see what happens," he said. "I don't think about it right now. I'm just thinking about having a good season with this team. Whatever they think my role is, I want to do that to help make this team better."</div> Source

Darko wants to win just as much as anyone, so he will likely be behind doing that.
