Are you guys into it? I've begun studying John Locke and Thomas Hobbes for a course and I found thier theories about "state of nature" and such pretty cool. Of course, I'm no philosphy expert, but I'm into reading about these kinda things.
It bores the **** out of me. I was trying to write a philosophy paper for english, but I gave up. I wrote it on Achilles' instead. Let me guess, someone is going to come in here and call me a simple-minded nimrod!!! I would like to go inside of the head of Marxx (spelling) though.
Yeah, I'm not into that whole "reading everything they ever wrote" thing...I just like learning about things in history basically, but to a brief extent.
My brother took philosophy in college and said it was interesting. It's okay; some of it can be interesting and some of it can be boring.
I've read a book on Confucius and I've read the analects, if that is considered philosophy. I might read about Scientology lol. (not really philosophy)

I study philosophy, it's a part of the educational program I am on. I think philosophy is pretty interesting, it really lets you form your own opinions about things. I'm not that far into the course yet, but so far, we have gone through the different branches and studied some philosophists and their particular ideas.

(not really philosophy)</div> i actually took two courses in confuciust logic and he's so overrated. not to mention that he's a sexist, although, i must admit the confucius doctrine has governed china at least culturally in spite of mao's attempts to dissolve it for 2000 years. of course china hasn't been a country for 2000 years so i'm referring to the shared sentimentality of the region. and i don't have philosophical inspirations, maybe plato and socrates since they invented philosophy.

(Off the top of my head I could only think of some of the adherence to ceremonies (li) that he cared a lot about, a lot of it is in Chapt 10 of Analects) Why do you feel he is sexist?
I'm in the second year of an undergraduate in philosophy. It is interesting, but if I learned anything from my first year class is that it is so huge. I guarantee that if you take it in uni, you're going to wonder how anyone can say how they like/don't like philosophy. There's just so much to generalize. I like reading the social theorists a lot (Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, etc.) and like 2 of my courses right now are going through Hobbes (who's replaced Locke as my favourite social contract theorist). Political philosophy, in general, gets me the most interested. Marx, Weber, etc. are awesome to read. I also enjoyed reading Sartre and about existentialism. I wasn't that big a fan of the Ancient Greek readings, but I've enjoyed Thucydides.
Philosophy is great, Plato is who I like most, I've read Plato's Republic at least 20 times and learn something new each time. Matt, philosophy on the surface is very boring. How I got into it was trying to relate it to things I like ... for example sports or current events. What I enjoy most about philosophy is their ability to take a complex idea and break it down to it's core and then question themselves if that is really the core. It's like a mental maze.

On the subject of philosophy: The little skit where an ancestor of Peter's a philosopher. Peter narrates: "And his great grandpa was Thomas Griffin, a great philosopher" Lois (or wife back then): "Thomas, would please go look for a job?" *long pause* Thomas Griffin: "Whyyyyy?"
I only took one Philosophy class, but I LOVED it....I'm a psych major so it's right down my alley....my favorite part was the "Philosopy of Art".....it really explains how you can like something artistically but not agree with it. The picture is really Jesus on the cross...........in urine......now a lot of people will not agree with the message behind the picture, but you can't deny that it does look nice.
Next semester, I'm taking a course called "The Philosophy Of Love & Sex". It's a chick course. It's all booked (67 girls, 2 guys!!!!!), and the other dude is gay! Safe to say, I can't wait!

Safe to say, I can't wait! </div> Makes it seem like you're excited cause of the gay guy if you just read that part, especially cause of the exclamations Just playing around, I'm sure it'll be a pretty good class. Hopefully it's not filled with those really angry feminist-type girls. My teacher was telling me how when she took a Women's studies course in Uni, some women took it personally that the professor was a male (although he was gay), even though he taught the course really well.
