http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-clipre...ack=1&cset=true OMG!! why is the NBA giving out free money??? kaman is worth at most around 6-7.5 M a year
The biggest reason that he's considered worth that much coin is that he's a young, improving 7 footer. People around the league will be salivating if they know he's got a shot at hitting the open market, so it does make some sense to overpay now and lock him up into the future rather than let him become a free agent and have other teams signing him to massive offer sheets. Is he worth $10 million right now? Nope. But he's worth signing for a larger amount than he's worth due to the competition that his team will face from other team if/when he is available combined with his long-term potential. I think if I was going to sign him to a contract like that, though, I'd write in a provision about all salary being null and void if that dude doesn't get a makeover. Or at least cut his hair...
Kaman is definitley worth 10 mil. If freakin Adonal Foyle is getting 10 a year Kaman definitley deserves at least that. Kaman is the 3rd best probably second best center in the league. He's a efin Dog out their and he will compete every game. If the clips dont give him that much than that shows they arent serious about winning or just stupid.
Well, Adonal Foyle is not worth anywhere near $5 million much less than the $8 to $10 million his contract is giving him. Kaman, on the other hand, is not yet worth $10 million but he is certainly on the cusp of being worth that much - thus trying to bargain up now in hopes that he starts being worth that much. First off, he's young (24 years old) and he's already producing, which is a great sign as most centers develop slowly. If you look at his statistics, he's among the top Centers in points, rebounds, and field goal percentage. He also has decent block numbers and was pretty durable. For a more accurate comparison than say, Foyle, Jamaal Maagloire received about $10 million for his services. I think it's comparable, Maagloire, on bad teams, contributed about as much as Kaman is on a better Clippers squad. Also, Kaman's numbers are great considering he is playing next to Elton Brand. Dalembert and Nene are two other young centers who will getting $10 million a year and they didn't even have as good a year as Kaman. Maybe more accurate than his raw numbers is the fact that the team plays better with him and the team needs a center for the future. Just watching him play, I expect him to grow into a better player and be one of the top centers in a few years.
I think he`s worth it. Just looking at last season, he should look to improve more and more. Looking down the road, locking up this guy would be a smart move by the Clippers.
Definitely. I wouldn't be surprised if he rises his value to over 11-12 million by the end of the year. Centers like him don't grow on trees. He's already one of the best rebounders in the NBA, putting up multiple 20 rebound games last year, and is a beast down low offensively as well, even if he's not the most polished. There's not one GM in the Clippers situation that wouldn't give him 10 million per. Three players the Clippers need to hold onto: Brand, Kaman, Livingston. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post"> Can teams give out 6 year deals? I thought it was limited to 5 year deals.</div> Yeah, 5 year deals are the max for a player signing his first contract after his rookie one. You also need a certain amount of a NBA service years beforeyou can get a 6 year deal from another team. I believe it's 5 or 6 years of NBA service until you're eligable to get a 6 year contract.
You might as well give him $10 million a year. I mean if players get 10-15 million that aren't worth it, why not him. Besides, the fact that teams will end up paying him around $10 million, then why not the Clips resign him instead of losing him?!
Well, considering how tough it is to get a good center in todays league, and how important the center position is going to become in the next 2-3 years, I think you absolutely have to give him that money. Most people already put the guy as the 3rd, 4th or 5th best center in the league....and thats only after his 3rd years. He is only going to get better and Kaman will have incredible value on the free-agency market, so just lock him up and keep him.
Is this a real question? Of course he is, why do people always act like they don't know how the market works? Kaman is one of the few solid back to the basket C's in the league. He's a 9 RPG and about 1.5 BPG guy. He gives you 11-12 PPG, and realistically if you watch him play, he can give you more with more shots. Nene got $10 million, Wilcox got like $8 million/year, Kaman is more valuable than both those guys, it's an easy choice really. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">and is a beast down low offensively as well, even if he's not the most polished.</div> He's probably a lot more polished than most people think. I wouldn't say he's not polished at all. He can finish hook shots with both the right and left equally as well, he can play the power game down low and bang, and he's even developed a shot jumpshot from about 8 feet that he hits very well.
He could definitely polish up his post play...sometimes he makes dumb moves and end up getting offensive fouls...but in two years hes going to be pretty damn hard to stop. And he will get better with experience...he broke down in the playoffs, but it shouldn't happen again now that hes had to face it once.
I think thats kind of a bargain.. since they'll probably pay him 8 million the first year of the new contract and work its way up with the 8% increase in the contract. On top he's still very young and i don't think you'll find another young productive center in the FA market that will take 8 million the first year. You'll probably see them demand more than 10 mill. On top of that, playing beside Brand will make him even better as the years comes along. Also they'll probably end up being the one of the best frontcourt duo if they aren't already. Add Maggette/Livingston into the mix with the duo, it's going to look even better in the future.
Chris Kaman is going to have a REALLY good successful career especially since he plays with Brand. Elton Brand makes all his teammates better and is definitely going to help Kaman. I can't think of any better duo already that is more talent wise as Kaman and Brand. He gets points, rebounds, and blocks. He is a terrific player and this season will bump up all his avgs.
