<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Allen Iverson watched Shavlik Randolph on Saturday night and marveled at what he saw.

?I was telling Billy [King] Coach [Mike Krzyewski] K has got some real serious job security at Duke to have somebody like that and not play him his last year,? Iverson said. ?Man, he can do it all. He's got offensive skills and he plays hard.?

While Randolph's limited role for Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils in 2004-05 convinced him to declare for the draft after his junior season, the 30 NBA teams bypassed him in both rounds. But Randolph, a 6-10 power forward, signed as a free agent with former Duke defensive standout King and the Sixers, then worked his way up to spot minutes as a rookie reserve after recovering from some early season injuries.

After agreeing to a two-year, $2 million contract and spending many late nights playing 1-on-1 with teammate Samuel Dalembert, Randolph appears headed for a more significant role backing up Chris Webber this season.

?I think I did good things when I played last year,? Randolph said after contributing 13 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in Saturday's 102-100 preseason loss to the Knicks. ?They didn't really expect me to play last year and I did, so this year they have some expectations for me. The more I play, the more things I'm able to do on the court.?

Randolph's biggest strength continues to be his rebounding. He has also improved at the offensive end and is stronger.

?He's a lot more comfortable,? Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said. ?I think your second year in the league, you're going to be a lot more comfortable. Last year, when he entered the game, he had a lot of energy offensive rebounding, and it's not going to be any different this year. He's just an energy-type player.?

Randolph insists that his 1-on-1 sessions with Dalembert are a big reason for his progress.

?I got so much better because I had to learn how to manipulate the ball a lot better and how to pump-fake because if I can get a shot off over Samuel Dalembert, I can get a shot off over anybody because he's the best shot-blocker in the NBA,? Randolph said.

?When I played against other people that were also really good, I said, "Man, this is easy because Sam is such a good shot-blocker.' ?

Randolph isn't afraid to absorb punishment on the floor by drawing offensive fouls, as his constantly bruised tailbone attests.

?What I like about him more than anything is I guess his tailbone was hurting, and he kept taking charges,? Iverson said. ?I just had another respect for him. I like to play with guys that are tough. If you're hurting like that and you keep doing it anyway, that shows you're putting it all on the line for the team.?

I've always liked Shav, and it's good to see him coming along. Who knows. Maybe in the future, he can be an NBA starter?

He plays with heart, plays tough, hustles, and does all the little things needed to win
