<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Rodney Carney proved early-on in training camp that he has plenty of confidence in taking any big shot at any point of the game.

Not many rookies would want the ball in the waning seconds with the game on the line, not even first-round picks trying to impress and earn a spot in the regular rotation. In a meaningless preseason game in Spain, Carney made the most of his shot - con gusto (with pleasure).

No matter how you say it or where it occurred, Carney's shooting was an early surprise in the Philadelphia 76ers' overseas training camp. The only person not surprised was Carney himself.

"He can shoot deeper than I thought," coach Maurice Cheeks said after Monday's practice. "I didn't know he could shoot that deep."

Carney took a pass from former Temple standout Rick Bunsen and hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 10 seconds left to beat the Phoenix Suns in an exhibition mini-tournament in Europe. Cheeks said after the game it took "huge guts" for a rookie to attempt that shot.

Cheeks knew of at least one rookie who would have slinked away from the moment.

    "Yeah, me," he said, laughing.

Making the shot was exciting for Carney, the Conference USA player of the year out of Memphis. Taking it was no big deal.

"There were a couple of seconds on the clock, so you've got to shoot the ball," Carney said. "That was a good shot for me. I knew when he passed the ball I was going to let it loose."

Maybe the Sixers won't be counting on Carney to attempt many more winners once the regular season starts, but the 6-foot-7 forward has the kind of attributes they sorely need. He can shoot from long range and holds Memphis' career record for 3-pointers (287), and he can lock down a playmaker with tight defense, something that's earned him extra accolades from Cheeks.

The Sixers were one of the worst defensive teams in the league last season and Carney is an active, athletic defender who should bolster the frontcourt.

"I'm certainly not afraid to put him in a game, just watching his abilities and the way he competes," Cheeks said.

While Carney has a similar game and frame to dunking swingman Andre Iguodala, Cheeks played them at the same time in games in the Sixers' European stops in Spain and Germany. Cheeks liked the way the duo competed defensively, and the athleticism is boost to a lineup that lacks many springy legs.

But Iguodala has only shown flashes of his offensive output, often lost with Chris Webber and Allen Iverson dominating the ball, sometimes leaving him with little more than alley-oops to score his points. Carney, whom Cheeks said has been of the hardest-working and well-prepared players so far in camp, isn't worried yet about finding an offensive flow.

"Offensively, they've already got the guys they need," Carney said. "I'll just try and get in where I fit in."

Making a few more clutch shots like he did in Spain can only help. Sinking them in front his new coach can't hurt, either.

"I was going to take it," Carney said, smiling "It was right in front of him, too."

Yep, that's right. Carney has surprised me too. I've always thought Carney would turn into a good player, but I never thought he would be contributing as much as he is so far in the pre-season games. Let's hope it carries out into the regular season.

If Carney keeps playing like this, he should get the start over Korver. I like the sound of Kyle coming off the bench.

I haven't seen much of the Sixers preseason. But i checked the stats and he's only averaging 5 points, which doesn't impress me that much. How about Green? How has he been doing?

I think our line up looks like

    Samuel Dalembert
    Chris Webber
    Andre Iguodala
    Willie Green
    Allen Iverson

If Sammy can continue his dominance in the paint and take some pressure off Webber defensively and same for Willie, I think this is a pretty damn good defensive line up. Then we can insert Shav or Hunter for Webber and Sammy. I honestly don't see Carney getting more than 15-20 minutes though.

i think carney could work his way past korver and green into the starting lineup. with green backing up AI and AI2, and korver backing up carney

Sounds good too me. We`d have such a versatile lineup. Green and Korver would need to show good bench presence though.

I know it's kinda OT but..it took me a while before I realized you were The Soft Parade. [IMG]

But anyway...I'm loving Carney's play right now. He just hustles out there every night, he'll work his way into the starting lineup I'm sure.

I'm not surprised at anything. I expect Carney to be a good player and thats that.

Once he proves that in the regular season than I'll give my judgement.

I think Carney will have a better rookie season than Iguodala did. I also think that he will be starting; Korver is better off the bench along with Green as offensive sparks.

Korver seems better suited off the bench because of his 3PT shooting. Carney is a good defender and should be starting along with the 2 AIs.

with carney, igoudala, and dalembert in our starting lineup, our defense and athletisism would be off the charts. hopefully carney will be a defensive leader for our team.
