I mainly listen to Rap, but lately I've also been listening to Rock. Mostly Papa Roach- "To be Loved". Can any Rock fans here get me some bands to listen to. Rock isn't as bad as I thought. I just like Rap more.

System of a Down. I've been listening to them a lot these days. And they're definitely better than Papa Roach.

I'm not that big of a rock fan as some of the dudes in this board, but Nirvana is amazing.

Yeah dude, I've been getting into Nirvana lately. Carter, I don't know if you'll like these or not but they're worth checking out:

    Nirvana - Lithium
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Nirvana - Come As You Are
    Nirvana - Rape Me
Alice In Chains - Man In the Box
Rage Against the Machine - Geurilla Radio

I don't know if that's the type of music he's looking for though bro'. There's a huge difference between The Doors and Papa Roach. Compare it to the difference between Nas and the Ying Yang Twins.

Here's a pretty universal recommendation though: Jimi Hendrix.

Here's a YouTube link of Jimi so you can preview before D/L'ing or buying - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAOem6AkGjM

[IMG] My bad, I just thought you would be the right person who could recommend him to various artists.

Trying not to allow my prick elitism to take over this response, but I would honestly start by listening to some of the older rock acts, like Zeppelin or the Who and Jimi Hendrix, because that's true rock music. The new stuff, well, make your own opinions about that stuff, but I'd start with the classics.

Of newer bands that aren't worthless, I'd agree with all the bands listed so far, acts like Nirvana, Sevendust (very good), and that band that formed with the guy from Soundgarden and the guys from Rage, I can never remember their name, they're decent.

EDIT: Audioslave is the band I was thinking of

I agree with Schaddy, The Who is great band to start out with, audioslave is good (as well as Soundgaren and Rage Against the Machine). I love Sublime, though they aren't really rock. Nirvana is great. Foo Fighters and the Goo Goo Dolls are good as well.

Also since you like Papa Roach, you may like Korn.

Since you are from the Bay Area check out some of Operation Ivy's material. They were an underground punk band from Berkeley that was in existence from 87' to 89' and two of the members later went on to make Rancid, which is more mainstream (though I much prefer Operation Ivy). They've got a lot of good simple punk songs.

I'm a huge Sublime fan too but its probably more reggae than it is rock. Nirvana is good, if you like Papa Roach you also may like Korn or Rage Against the Machine like others mentioned. AC/DC is always good, so is Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus, System of a Down, Guns N Roses, The Ramones.

LP is pretty good, I'd definately check out their first album, every song is good, but their sound gets old for me. I wouldn't disagree with a single band that anyone has mentioned so far.

Lots of diverse recommendations here. Not that any of them are bad, because I like most of the bands mentioned in a unique way, but for a first time rock listener, I'd stick with Jimi myself. Who doesn't like Jimi? But like Schaddy said, that could be the prick elitism in me talking.

What Papa Roach are you listening to? I remember hearing a newer song and it was mainstream garbage rock, but I remember there earlier stuff being more Nu-Metal.

Avenged Sevenfold, Three Day's Grace, and Nonpoint are a few other current bands that might appeal to you. Moo2k4's probably got some suggestions. I'm a noob comparatively.

Off topic question: Why do people who are not into rock always get into it through Nirvana? I thought I was the only one, but everyone I know has gone down a similar path.

Sublime was the first rock band I was into, mostly because they're reggae/rap ish. Then I started listening to some older stuff like Tom Petty and The Eagles. So maybe give those three a listen if you want to follow the same path I did. Also, if you like Papa Roach... Limp Bizkit? [IMG]

A good start point I guess would be the 60`s and 70`s era where real rock all began. Doors, Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin. The list goes on and on...
