    Personally, I can't stand Hendrix.
And the Doors are pretty lame too.
Both artists got a boost from being dead.
Don't mean to start a flame war, but I think dying young makes you SEEM better than you were. In case you don't know both artists died VERY young from drugs.
If you really know that little about rock,
    some albums I would recommend:

U2-Achtung Baby (one of the best albums ever made i think)
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin or Led Zeppelin 4
Third Eye Blind - Third Eye Blind
Rage Against the Machine - Rage Against The Machine
    Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Pink Floyd - Echoes (best of)

Care to explain a little more? How did Hendrix and The Doors suck so badly?

    it's an opinion thing...
I personally don't like Hendrix's voice and his songwriting is average at best.
Hey Joe and All Along The Watchtower are great songs, but the rest of his stuff grates on me pretty quick.
The Doors - again Jim Morrison is a limited singer and their 8 minute jam sessions are kind of boring. Most of their songs are too simple to be much good. It's like they're missing something. What I mean is if you compare the songwriting of the Doors or Hendrix to U2, the Byrds, Stones, Springsteen or the Beatles, it's no contest.

And I can't stand U2. I think that U2's lyrics are shallow and emotionless, and Bono's as fake as they come, whereas the actual songwritting is piss-poor. From a technical standpoint, it's more simplistic than your average Doors song. Simply put, listening to a U2 album straight through would make me want to take a bullet in the brain.

... not to start a flame war or anything.

As for Hendrix and Morrison being overrated because they died young, I adamently disagree with you, although that is in fact the case with other mainstream over-glorified artists *cough* Kurt Cobain *cough* Janis Joplin *cough*...

I'm not about to write a 10-page essay on why I think you're dead f**king wrong on Hendrix and Morrison, and I know as soon as I start typing on the matter that's what it'll turn into, so I'll just say that really, like you said, it's a matter of opinion. I personally think your opinion sucks.

it's all good bro, if we all liked the same stuff the world would be boring wouldn't it. i'm sure there is some stuff that we both agree on.

Haha, yeah... sorry for the emotion-filled reply though. I probably should have taken a minute after reading your posts to chill. The Hendrix Experience and The Doors are just two musical groups that I'm really passionate about, and I personally can't get into U2. It's all a matter of opinion though as you said, and we can all agree on one thing - Amos Lee sucks.

If you're looking to make the transition from hip hop to rock, it's tough. I'd much rather you ease into it by way of Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit, and the such. Nu-Metal, as much as I hate it now, helps a hip hop only listener get into rock music much easier. It's not full on rock music, because it encompasses some hip hop flavor as well. Rage Against the Machine is great for this as well, as their vocalist is often reffered to as being a "rapper," and their guitarist drives in a lot of hip hop, jazzy influences into this stylings.

My current rock tastes are very left field and would be way off for anyone looking to get into the basic structure of rock music, so I'll refrain from spilling them.

    BTW, the Doors are horrible.

It really depends. There is so much stuff out there.

Depending on tastes, i'd suggest RATM and Rise Against (yes they do actually make good music.)

Classics like everybody suggested, Nirvana, Hendrix, etc. Pink Floyd and The Beatles are an absoloute must, for any music fans. At least try it. Myself, I'm not to crazy about the beatles, but they make good music.

Anyway, I think it would help if you could be more specific about your taste in music. I.E. what would appeal to you more? Coldplay (alt rock) or Mettalica (metal)? stuff like that.

Good God, finally someone that agrees with me. I am not much into the Doors at all (or even Hendrix for that matter -- Purple Haze, and that'd be all). . but some U2 songs make me want to cry for all the wrong reasons. That being said, I do listen to MANY, MANY, U2 songs, but even reviewing my "favorite" bands, they aren't so high up anymore. People tell me all of Oasis' songs sound the same, all I say is listen to newer U2 stuff and I could say the exact same thing. If anyone has any suggestions as to what I should listen to know (I am open to any of Jimi's work).

What is the general opinion of The Smiths here on JBB? I have listened to a few of their songs, and they have that 80s appeal. Oasis will probably always be my number 1 choice, music-wise, but I need some new stuff too.

The Smiths are one of my favorite bands. Check out The Queen Is Dead

What kind of rock are you attracted to? I'd definetely reccomend some Rush, King Crimson, the Bears, Mogwai, Meshuggah and the such but that's just my progressive outlook. There's so much to sift through.

<div class="quote_poster">Voodoo Child Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Bono's as fake as they come</div>Bono, while annoying and overexposed, has done more for Africa, AIDS, debt relief and various charities than just about any musician in the history of music. He also is one of the few celebs that really doesn't give a crap what people think of him. So I can forgive him doing his iPod commercials and showing up everywhere and the fact that recent U2 albums have not been very good - in fact, they're kind of like U2's version of elevator music. But the guy has some cool qualities. And it's not just cause I'm from Dublin.[IMG]

    <div class="quote_poster">Carter Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I mostly like metal types.</div>

Then In Flames, RATM, SOAD, Sepultra, At the Gates, Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, Mettalica, Mega Death, Slayer, Pantera, Black Sabbath, Dream Theater, Dark Tranquillity, etc etc.

There is a lot of stuff out there, so if I were you, I'd listen to a little bit of everything that people are suggesting, so you know you're not going to miss anything. Then just mention some bands that you liked, so we really know what you like. Because it's still kind of fuzzy what exactly you're into.

I was into metal for a while, then rap, and now I moved onto more indie/alt rock stuff.

I plan to check out the other stuff you suggested in response to my post. . but EXCELLENT call on Iron Maiden. Not the usual stuff I listen to, but No More Lies is one helleva' song. Like Judas Priest + 10x better guitarring = Iron Maiden. Or at least, in that song.

If you're looking for metal stuff, let me throw my opinion in here:

Avenged Sevenfold (specifically Waking The Fallen or City of Evil)
Trivium (Ascendancy is probably the best heavy metal album I've ever heard)
    Iron Maiden
    Black Sabbath
    Metallica (obvious one)
    Megadeth
    Mudvayne
    Anthrax
    Atreyu

Those are just some of my recommendations. I'm a fairly avid metal fan, getting back into over the past year or so after not really listening to much of it for a while.

I messed up. I mixed up metal with alternative. I hate the metal types and I like alternative.
