Coach Scott Skiles said as much a week or so into the preseason, when he called 7-1 center Luke Schenscher the favorite to secure the final roster spot. After all, the Bulls seemingly lack size in the frontcourt even with the additions of center Ben Wallace and forward P.J. Brown.

Yet Barrett remains with the team with nine days until the Bulls open the regular season Oct. 31 at Miami.

''He's played well,'' Skiles said of the Seton Hall product, who has played 57 NBA games with four teams in two seasons. ''He has a legitimate chance to make the team. If he's not the quickest guy on the roster, he's one of the quickest. He makes open shots. He's played in NBA games. He has a good command of the team when he's on the floor. He's a hard worker. There's a lot to like about him. We'll play these last [exhibition] games and see what happens.''

Asked if the Bulls could afford keeping such a small guard rather than a center such as Schenscher, Skiles said, ''I would argue sometimes it's even harder to find a legit point guard -- just as hard, anyway -- as it is to find a 7-footer who can do anything. There just aren't that many legit point guards anymore. And a lot of them are score-first guards or are labeled a point guard, but not really.''

Barrett said all he needs to stay in the NBA is a team that's a good fit.

''This team is known for playing hard, and with my personality and style, I like to play hard, too,'' said Barrett, who also has played for Toronto, Phoenix, Orlando and Houston. ''I'm trying to execute all the plays.''

Barrett admits his size always worries teams. </div>
