Yeah I just heard this on the news. Someone was calling his race "monkeys" and other racial slurs I wont mentioned. Messed up stuff. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">"The league is getting tougher on the player. We need to get tougher to ... the people who accuse us and mistreat us. "Guys like Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), Bill Russell, Oscar Robinson, they don't want to see this happen to today, to our generation, what they witnessed in their lifetime when they were playing to pay the price for what we have today. "It's sad that this is still going on in America."</div> Amen to that Deke.
I figured that that's what was goin on....that guy looked like trouble, and then I saw Deke and put 2 and 2 together....I agree that he should be banned from NBA arenas for life, there's no place for that in basketball.
I love going to games and taunting players, but there are certain lines that I won't cross.....I keep everything on a basketball level....nothing personal.
Actually I just saw an interview with the guy considering it was in Orlando, and he actually didn't mean any racial slurs by it. Deke had just fouled Dwight on a dunk and he called Deke a monkey, Deke gave him the finger, and then the guy made a monkey face. Apparently the guy is also close to the Magic organization as he had just held a party for them. The guy said he meant nothing racial in the taunt and that if he had saw it was going to be taken like that, he wouldn't have done it again. Uncalled for? Yes, but it was really Deka who overreacted imo.
Naw, that isn't an overreaction....racial slurs have a lot of power behind them, and I have a hard time believing that the dude "didn't mean anything by it".....that guy is just a bigoted jerk.

Also worthy of note is that he did it after he fouled Dwight, so I doubt a racist/bigot would jump to the defense of a black man when another black man fouls him.

<div class="quote_poster">THE DREAM Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Why is that hard to believe....just because you watch a sport that's predominantly black doesn't mean that you can't be a bigot....</div> I just highly doubt a bigot and/or racist would actively watch and even go to an NBA game with such a high number of African Americans there. It would be like a KKK member going to a Black Panther meeting.
are you serious? in no way is that NOT a racial slur. because african americas were called "monkeys" as well as other words back when africans were used on slaves, even still to this day many racists (which ive seen been said) call african americas "monkeys" thats so stupid to say he wouldnt think he would take it serious, imagine if you are a african america heritage and your grand father had to put up through being called a "monkey" not because of what he does/did but because of his skin color. in no way did mutombo over react

I believe him, I mean it just doesn't make any sense what so ever that he would call Deke a monkey and not Dwight, they are the same skin tone. The guy just let his emotion of the game get to him. There is also 10x worse racial slurs than monkey out there which he could have used. Why would a racist call the opposing team member a racial slur and not his own team? That makes no sense at all. Do the "white" Magic jerseys make him change his mind? I just can't see that guy being racist or a bigot especially when I saw him on the news. He has held parties for the Magic, and Dwight was there as well as plenty of other African Americans. <div class="quote_poster">THE DREAM Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">lol........comparing the kkk going to a panther meeting to the a racist being a basketball fan is totally different........bigots come in many forms.</div> My fact still stands though, it would be like a black racist hating whites and yet he loves going to hockey games. thedude9990 put it best. <div class="quote_poster">Franchise4Ever Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">I have a hard time believing in general that the guy is racist or a bigot considering he went to a basketball game in the first place where well over 50% of NBA Players have African heritage. The Cotton Club? Same scenario. And Dwight was asking for it. Mutombo is a respected vet, who doesn't need a youngster posterizing him in preseason. Dwight should have known a hard foul was coming when you try to dunk that far away, with that much speed/strength heading towards Mutombo. The league better not fine Deke for this. BTW, did anyone else see the game? That shirt the moron was wearing was hideous. Bill Worrel said he was being thrown out for wearing that shirt. <div class="quote_poster">Franchise4Ever Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">The guy said he was sorry and he didn't mean any racial slurs by it. He looked sincere about it. Like I also said, he holds parties for the Magic and he is well known within the organization. Meaning he meets quite frequently with "those blacks he hates so much". Again I am not condoning his actions nor do I stand by them, they are uncalled for and were unneeded, but I don't think he is a racist. <div class="quote_poster">Quoting igotask8board:</div><div class="quote_post">And rascism will never make sense.</div> No doubt, but I doubt the guy was racist.
The fact remains the guy could have said any other word, but he chose a racist term, now why is that? You cannot justify what this man said regardless if he is sorry or not. Of course he is going to apoligize becuase he knows he will become a mark by many people.

The guy doesn't have to be a Neo-Nazi or KKK member to be racist. He treated Mutombo's race as if it's some sort of defect that's ridicule-worthy. If it was Greg Ostertag instead, maybe he would have called him a fatty. But it was Mutombo, and he decided to call him a monkey. That's just indefensible, and blatantly racist.
