Here are the preseason stats for the Rockets players. The GS stat stands for Hollinger's Game Score rating, which is an easy-to-calculate summary metric incorporating all the player's boxscore stats (sort of similar to PER). Some observations: <ul> [*]Spanoulis does very poorly by the GS measurement. He's been a turnover machine, averaging over 8 turnovers per 40 minutes played! [*]Padgett has played well, particularly on the boards. His 17.1 rebound rate is third on the team, behind Yao and Haryasz (who played just 19 minutes). [*]Tracy ... free throws need work! His FT% dipped somewhat last year, but hopefully he doesn't go below 70% this season. Not to worried. [*]Yao's done a great job on the boards, but he's been turning it over way too much and not scoring with his usual efficiency (52.4 TS% is below the league preseason average, in fact) [*]Chuck Hayes, the stat wunderkind last year, has not fared too well in the preseason. Rebounding is well below-standard for him and he's been fouling like crazy. To be fair, a lot of the turnovers he's credited with are illegal screens which aren't really his fault. [*]Novak's TS% (scoring efficiency) is out of this world; only Artis Gilmore back in the early 80s finished a season with a TS% higher than 70%. [*]Battier's stats are solid, but we know that's not where his real value lies [*]John Lucas has been a ball hog while in the game (third in Usage behind Yao and Tracy) [*]Luther's 0-10 game hurt his numbers big time. He was statistically a top-4 player on the team before that game. I think. But we are going to have a 12 man roster that we will use and the other 3 I guess on IL. This is my 12 man roster. Rafer/V-Span/Head Wells/Snyder Tmac/Novak/Battier Battier/Howard/Padgett Yao/Deke
Don't know why people expect Howard to get a lot of minutes at PF this year. Van Gundy has made it fairly clear he wants a 3-point shooter at that position. This is what the rotation is going to be at the start of the season, based on JVG's radio interview today morning: Starters (as expected): C - Yao PF - Battier SF - McGrady SG - Snyder PG - Alston Luther (PG/SG), Novak (SF/PF), and Bonzi (SG/SF, when he gets back) are set coming off the bench. They will be the everyday players. After that, it will basically be backup center by committee -- either Hayes, Mutombo, or Howard depending on the matchup. Don't expect Spanoulis or Padgett to get many minutes for this team, at least at the start of the season. Unless there's foul trouble or injuries, they'll probably be garbage time players.
Man, where the hell is Bonzi?!? Replace Snyder with Bonzi (when he gets back ) and I'll be satisfied.
<div class="quote_poster">Pakman Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Man, where the hell is Bonzi?!? Replace Snyder with Bonzi (when he gets back ) and I'll be satisfied.</div> Hes not going to be starting right away. My guess is that he will be on the injured list till Van Gundy think he is ready. He was gone most of preseason..
I'd say Bonzi is going to start, period, unless there's some sort of injury. We need spot shoot and occasional slashing from our 2-guard spot in the starting lineup, with Yao drawing the attention down low and Alston and McGrady primarily handling the ball on the perimeter. Playing Bonzi with that group doesn't make too much sense. His game is posting up smaller defenders. I think he's best suited coming off the bench and serving as the primary low post option when Yao isn't in the game.
