<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Although it was just one season, Syracuse University played a big role in Carmelo Anthony's development. Now the Nuggets star will be playing a big role in helping the Orange develop its future basketball stars - possibly at "The Melo Center."

Syracuse officials announced Tuesday that Anthony will donate $3 million toward the construction of a basketball practice facility for the men's and women's programs. The 2003 NCAA Final Four most outstanding player, who led Syracuse to its lone national championship, was joined at Tuesday's news conference at the Pepsi Center by Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim and athletic director Daryl Gross.

Anthony will pay the $3 million over six years beginning in January, and has an option to pay the entire amount earlier, according to his representation agency BDA Sports.

"I want to thank the whole city of Syracuse, Coach Boeheim and the university for giving me the opportunity to do something like this," Anthony said. "This is a legacy. I don't think an active (NBA) player right now is doing something like this. This is going to be (used) for the next 100 years.

"When you go to Syracuse, you're going to see the Melo Center or something like that. We don't know a name yet."

Anthony's gift represents one of the largest individual donations to Syracuse athletics and could be the largest donation ever given by a pro athlete to a school they attended. In 1998, then-Atlanta Hawk Steve Smith gave $2.5 million to his alma mater, Michigan State. Former Colorado State football player Joey Porter donated $200,000 to the athletic department in April 2005 to upgrade the football facilities. </div>

I don't know about you guys, but wouldn't that 3 million be better off used to feed starving kids in Africa? Anyway, it's a lot of money, and it's great to see players giving back.

^^^I kind of see what you're getting at, it's good to see Melo giving, but I think he could do something more resourceful with the money he's dishing out (this applies to a lot athletes and celebrities)
