You don't see that everyday.</div> Yeah, you often dont see a center shooting freethrows for the Rockets. Yao has one of the best free throw % in the league for Centers. I wouldnt say he has learned to avoid simple mistakes just yet. Like when I watch some Rockets games, I see Yao playing a little weak. He needs to still get a little aggresive. Like if someone bumps him on a rebound, he would just fall there and stay on the floor for 3-4 seconds and lazily get back on the other side of the floor. He still plays a bit weak. He needs to be a little more aggressive, if he can do that, then you have the perfect center.

I recall him having a 15 block, and 30 rebounds, with somewhere close to 20 points in a single game!! That to me is dominance. Yao's performance was impressive, but I dont think he'll ever win a scoring title, and have monsterous games like Shaq has had.</div> 24 Points, 28 Rebounds, 3 Assists, 1 Steal, 15 Blocks to be exact, argubally the biggest game in NBA history, almost a 20/20/20 game. IMO Yao has surpassed Shaq as the best Center in the league at this point in time. Yao is simply amazing on some nights, but I still believe he should rebound more. Anyone whos 7'6 needs to be pulling down 13-15 rebounds a game.

Can you name a player in the history of the league who was taller than 7'3 that rebounded like that? Do you realize that the greatest rebounder in the history of the league (in terms of rebound%) was only 6'7 or 6'8? Yao's combination of height and bulk offers him some advantages on the boards. But there are just as many disadvantages. Because of his physique, he isn't mobile enough to chase down rebounds outside of his area. And he isn't agile at all. I just get annoyed when people try to put down Yao based on what they think he "should" be able to do just because of his height. They act like there's a long history of people with great height (> 7'3) dominating the league, when there isn't.

That's like Steve Nash, Pedja, Ray Allen, Dirk, and Billups territory. I really don't know what else there is to complain about Yao. Hell any team in the leauge would die to have him on their team as the starting center. What else does the man have to do to prove he's one of the best if not the best in today's NBA?

Yeah it's pretty clear cut that Yao since his surgery last season has been better than Shaq. You cant argue with the numbers and really, anyone who's seen them play can tell the obvious and (at least to me) it seems pretty clear that for Yao to eclipse Shaq at the end of his career is a huge stretch.. Shaq is probably the most dominant player of all time (well, next to Wilt), and certainly of modern basketball.. His career averages are ridiculous, and he has translated that into championships. Yao would have to put up some monstrous numbers to compete.. We're talking mid to high 20's scoring for a decade, as well as some solid assist numbers to compensate for the fact that he will likely not approach Shaq in terms of rebounds.. That Yao has the potential to be a legendary player is totally feasible imo, but Shaq is already there
a bit off topic, but I think Bynum will surpass both in his PRIME!!!! As long as he continues to have the right attitude, at just 19, he will grow leaps and bounds! Watch out Yao MING!!!!
Both Shaq and Yao in their primes? Yeah, I know the guy is young, but you have too much confidence in him.
Well, considering the strides he took from just last year, I don't know how much of a stretch it'd be. So far this year, he's shown some flashes of being a good shot blocker and he's showcased a good offensive game. His post moves have greatly improved from last year and he's gotten a lot stronger. The only thing hurting him right now is his lack of stamina at this moment. Once his conditioning goes up, he'll be even better. Also realize that he's going to get a lot of minutes this year now that Mihm is done for the year, which will really help his development out even more.
<font size=""2"">Shaq Not Impressed By Yao's Dominance</font> <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Shaquille O'Neal was dominated, but he wasn't impressed. Yao Ming won his matchup with O'Neal, finishing with 34 points and 14 rebounds Sunday night to lead the Houston Rockets to their fourth straight victory, 94-72 over the Miami Heat . "He's pretty much the same, just big, 7-6," O'Neal said. "He's just doing what he's supposed to do." "My only chance against Shaq is to keep him on the run," Yao said. "Shaq is much stronger and bigger than me. My only chance on beating him is to keep running and running against him. "Every time I score on him I was happy like a kid, like a kid getting candy on Halloween because it's really too hard to score on him, too hard. He's just great." </div> Shaq seems a bit jealous here.

ATLEAST. Yao has the skills and size to reach over players to grab the ball but I dont think he does enough under the board to utilize his skills. Ive always felt the same way about big men.. I felt the same way about Shaq forever, but quite frankly I think Yao should be pulling down more boards than Shaq can handle himself. Just my opinion.. it always has been and it wont change. If you're a big man with great skill you have to be pulling down a lot of boards for me.. so many players in the NBA could be doing more than they do under the rim.

Up to a point, yeah you should be a dominant rebounder. Shaq had the athleticism, strength, agility in his prime to be a dominant rebounder. Yao isn't built that way. Just because a player is tall doesn't mean they're "supposed' to be a great rebounder. You have to look at all of their physical characteristics and limitations. There's a reason that there haven't been many great rebounders who were taller than 7'3 (if at all). Height isn't everything. Yao is always going to get a bum wrap by a lot of fans because they don't understand that his height has both advantages AND disadvantages.

Zydrunas Ilgauskaus is 7'3 and he has never averaged 9 or more rpg. Manute Bol averaged 6 rpg once, and never any rpg higher. Although he put up some quite impressive block per game stats in limited time.
