Agent: Warriors Interested In Luke Jackson

According to Luke Jackson's agent, Mark Bartelstein, the Warriors have inquired about the former Oregon standout.

Jackson has suffered from back injuries during his short career and was dealt from Cleveland to Boston in October. He was one of the final cuts made by Danny Ainge of the Celtcis. </div>

Never seen the kid play, how is he? From his draft profile he seems like a Dunleavy type player.

    Here's a scouting report:

    http://www.collegehoopsnet.com/Draft/Prospects/LJackson.htm

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Oregon forward Luke Jackson is a rarity in this year?s draft. The experienced Oregon senior stayed in school for four years and finds himself as one of the few four-year veterans surrounded by high schoolers, Europeans, and college underclassmen. In an age where staying four years almost lowers a player?s draft prospects, Jackson is hoping his versatile game will propel him into the upper tier of the 1st Round of the Draft.

The 6?7? small forward had a monster senior season, finishing as the Pac 10?s only player in the top 10 in scoring, rebounding, and assists. For the season he averaged 21.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. Some might want to compare ?Cool Hand Luke? to another former Pac 10 star of similar race and build in former UCLA star Jason Kapono, but that assumption would be inaccurate. Although both are tall, white swingmen, Jackson isn?t a one-dimensional three-point assassin like Kapono. His deadly behind the arc stroke (44 percent 3-point percentage) is but one weapon of his diverse game. His unselfish arsenal of skills includes the court vision of guards much smaller than he and the rebounding prowess of much larger players. Throughout his collegiate career, Jackson has always been the player throwing the extra pass to garner a nice assist, sacrificing his body for dirty work, or taking a game over with his scoring. His two career triple-doubles are evidence of this,as are his All-Pac 10 and All-American honors. If there is a weakness to his game it is his lack of athleticism that prevents him from being a lock down defender or a pogo stick slasher. He might struggle early matching up to the NBA?s quicker swingmen.

The two-time Oregon High school Player of the Year could?ve left school early like his teammate point guard Luke Ridnour. Instead he stayed to enjoy a tremendous individual season that has him poised to be one of few senior first round locks in the coming draft along with St. Joseph?s guard Jameer Nelson and BYU center Rafael Araujo. CHN?s latest mock draft has him going 22nd overall. Like Nelson and Araujo, his fourth year</div>

He ended up being the #10 pick by Cleveland -- sounds like the Dunleavy comparisons are pretty fair -- look for Mully to give him 5 years, 50 mils [IMG]

I saw Luke Jackson in college. He's pretty solid. Well rounded game like a Brent Barry or a good verison of Dunleavy, I think. Luke's pretty quick for SF (he's not really a jumper like Barry). So his overall quickness is good, but his lateral quickness sucks doodie. He's too skinny to play the defense for that position of small forward. He's also might be too slow for the shooting guard spot. He better bring things offensively because he's going to be a defensive liability IMO. Did Cleveland even get anything for him? What's his current status? I"ll just read the article heh.

Are they considering him mainly to stretch the D with his outside shooting? It's just strange because the Warriors' biggest weakness is rebounding and I can't see how Jackson will help there.

He was a good rebounder in college. He got some triple double type games, but I'm not sure if he's going to be that mismatch he was in college. It's like when Battier went from college to pros. Star in college, really good role player in the nba that helps both offense and defense.

If we're getting Jackson for nothing I'd take him. We could use a glue player that's not overly sloth-like like some of our other guys. When they talk deceptively quick, it means they slow. So when they're talking about Luke Jackson being deceptively quick, it must have meant the scouting reports saw him as an nba shooting guard rather than small forward. I mean 6'7 is minimum height for small forward, but his weight is 215. Jrich weighs about 225. I wonder who will own who in the post because that 10 lbs is all solid muscle/mass. That 6'7 height won't mean squat if he doesn't have the strength... But Luke Jackson isn't really a wussy compared to Dunleavy type all around player because Jackson was a star on his team that could contribute in many stats like assists, rebounds, and points. Duke Dunleavy had Boozer and Jay Williams to feed off from. What did Oregon have when Luke Ridnour left?

Holy crap Luke Jackson was cut from the Celtics??? Damn was he that bad?

I'd figure teams would like to have a semi-quick swing guy that can rebound, assist, and shoot. I guess they knew they couldn't extend him or maybe Wallyworld was bad enough on D and a better shooter than Luke Jackson to have two weak defending swing dudes.

Great report on him, Custodian. I'd take a chance on Mr. Frodo with a 10-day trial. Not sure if any other team is bidding on him. He can spot up shoot and is a lefty which is a plus in my book. Like you said, he did well in college in rebounding and making assists, so he may do well in Nellie's system. I hesitate because of his lack of lateral quickness. He needs to play some D, but Nelson seems to overlook that.

Shane Battier is a lot better than Jackson plus he can play D. He would be a no-brainer over any of the SFs we have.

Heh, Frodo. I guess the other Luke of the Luke and Luke show is Bilbo Ridnour or something.

Anyway, thanks. Yeah, that's a given that Shane Battier is a lot better than Jackson. Nobody cuts the Duke super role player Shane Battier. He's too strong of a defender, he's a leader, and he's clutch. And contrary to some beliefs that he's a decent athlete, he's not quick at all, but he's strong, has quick hands, and he's extremely intelligent when it comes to reacting on defense. He doesn't get fooled much or shook up.

Jackson is just plain bad ballhawking it defensively IMO, but he was for a time considered the better of the two Lukes at Oregon because like I mentioned before Ridnour could assist, steal, rebound, shoot at extremly high %'s, he was a mismatch in college. At the nba level, he may not be able to use his 6'7 guard skills much because he is stuck between being too underweight for small forward and too slow for shooting guard. It is sort of like how that one guy on the Warriors couldn't find a place despite having a beautiful stroke and great all around skill. I think his name was Jiri Welsch. 6'7 shooting guard, seemed fluid, but wasn't that physically balanced nba player that could crack the rotation in Boston or Dallas.

I'd say Luke Jackson is very good. Too good to be just cut like that, but I guess everything is relative when it comes to college, high school, nba, whatever competition. Guys like Dunleavy and Murphy were decently athletic and tall for college level and those type of forwards are hard to find with any skill in the nba, so they still lpay. But at the nba level they are considered uber slow and if they were guards, they probably would be out of the league by now... I still bet the slowest nba athlete could kick our asses at running, but if one is super big and has skill, they stick around a long time. If it's a healthy Jackson, I'm not so sure he'd be starting material, but definitely a nice backup player for either SG/SF.

I bet his passing and some ballhandling will come to play, but if he plays small forward he will not rebound as well as he did in college because he was considered big for his position. In nba small forward, he's too lightweight to get position on a guy and he's too slow to get to the ball faster than guys that are more athletic, more physical. I still think he's better than Dunleavy as a shooter though. Free throw % and field goal % says it all. It means that if my 85% shooter at the line is a decent three point shooter, then he's most likely not going to f up the open three shot if he's behind the arc for a wide open. It's like with Fisher 80% free throw shooter. Barbosa jumping from 75% to 85%. It's like with Peja who shoots high 80's. It's like with Reggie or Ray Allen or Steve Nash or Kevin Martin. These guys will burn anybody if they leave them wide open because they do not choke if they are plenty open. The 70% shooters at the line, however, you wonder if they can make an open three. They just might choke being left all alone. That's why I generally dislike any perimeter player that cannot make free throws. It shows they are just plain weak when it comes to shot mechanics and how they can't get their mind under control during an audience and make a natural shot that they normally make when nobody is watching.

Dunleavy used to be 75 to 77% free throw shooter, but everything about his shooting game is way down... Must be the new money or the fans getting on his ass. He goes from 38% three point shooting to scoring worse than Jrich or Baron from behind the arc. And then his free throw % is down to lower 70's recently. Good shooters make at least 80%. We're not talking about Grant Hill who sucks from behind the arc, but is good at free throw % We're talking 35-38% 3 point shooters who jack up at the line or constantly miss wide open 20-25 foot wide open shots. Guys that open have to make it. It's like shooting a free throw in a way. Don't think about it, just shoot it the normal way and don't choke! Certain guys on the team just choke.

Also remember that some guys just get cut from one system only to have some success in another.

See Matt Barnes and Anthony Roberson -- not starters or anything but they've found some good PT with Nellie and are making decent use of it

Did Jumaine Jones ever get cut? I thought that guy was pretty good as a two dimensional role player. He can shoot the baseline in huge bunches and he defends at either forward spot.

I forget who the other cut guy is. Maybe Brevin Knight? I like Knight. He's like Speedy Claxton with courtvision.

Well, there is a reason why Cavs traded him for 2nd rounder and Celtics cut him even before the regular season starts. So, I am not excited with the news at all. To me, it bascially means that Nelson isn't exactly thrilled with Barnes and Roberson. They can still get cut and we can still fly under the luxury tax line...

I don't know..Knight is Charlotte's only other serviceable point guard aside from Felton, so I don't know if Bernie would give him up easy. He would be a good fit on the Warriors though.

I thought Knight was like #2 in assists in the league, a few years back?

edit: he was #3 last year, with 8.8, and he was #2 the year before, with 9.0.

No, I mean he might have been on his way to being a cut player before Charlotte picked him up in the expansion draft. I don't think he was overpaid or anything, was he? If he got minutes on the spurs, I'm sure he could offer some things similar to Speedy Claxton or if he was on the Bucks, he could be like TJ Ford. A guy that can run the team and steal the ball, go inside, and shoot from maybe about 18 to 20 feet. We're talking very good role player that is underrated because of size and weight and limited shooting range.

I find it ironic the Warriors are taking a look at another injury-prone Cleveland Cavalier. First Dajuan Wagner, and now Luke Jackson. The Warriors should take a strong look at Louis Amundson.

I know what you mean. I remember we picked up this guy by the name of JR Bremer. He was a Cavs guy as well [IMG] Not sure if he was injured, but the guy was just plain bad like he was.

Maybe we should try to pick up Lee Nailon or Zendon Hamilton lol. Hey they not bad for certain things.
