Back in the late '80s and early '90s, Chuck Daly and the Pistons employed a defensive scheme against Michael Jordan and the Bulls known as "The Jordan Rules". Just what were these rules?:

"to play him tough, to physically challenge him and to vary its defenses so as to try to throw him off balance. Sometimes the Pistons would overplay Jordan to keep the ball from him. Sometimes they would play him straight up, more often they would run a double-team at him as soon as he touched the ball to try to force him to give it up. And whenever he went to the basket, they made sure his path was not uncontested"

The Mavericks have their own version of these rules, called "The Kobe Rules", and the basic premises are just about the same. Here's an outline:

    1) Deny
    2) Get physical
    3) Utilize depth
    4) Vary the double teams
    5) Make him defend

This system has worked pretty well this season, limiting players like Tracy McGrady (8 points), Carmelo Anthony (19 pts), and Vince Carter (20 pts).

Additionally, the Mavs added three physical defenders over the summer in Devean George, Greg Buckner and Anthony Johnson.

And former Laker George made this prediction:

"He won't get 62 points this time," he said. "Somebody else might, but it won't be him."</div>

LOL seems like it did not work... kobe scored 33pts on 50% shooting...
of course he did not score 62 because he was not in the zone but if he was i think it WOULD HAVE BEEN a possibility...

Those "rules" are just general strategies any team employs againts a great one on one scorer. Dallas actually uses the phrase "Kobe Rules"?
