"It's the Sam Mitchell effect," Wolves forward Kevin Garnett said. "He understands how a lot of the players here play. I think he probably gets up for this game a little bit. He probably wouldn't admit it, but in private I get him to admit it."

Mitchell, who was close with Garnett during his time in Minnesota and wasn't re-signed in 2002, downplayed the suggestion that he has a point to prove. Mitchell was named the Raptors' coach in June 2004 after two seasons as an assistant in Milwaukee and 12 years playing for the Wolves.

"I have no bad feelings," Mitchell said. "Minnesota never did me wrong. They treated me very fairly when I was there. They offered me a position when I left. But I felt like for my career, I probably needed to go somewhere else and carve out a niche for myself. That's the reason I'm not there."

Before the game, Mitchell said of his 4-0 start against Minnesota: "For four days in two seasons, we just happened to play better."

    Make that five days.</div>
