<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">BAGHDAD -- Saddam Hussein's execution for his role in the deaths of 148 Shiite men and boys nearly a quarter-century ago is expected to occur by the end of Saturday, Iraqi and U.S. officials say.

As of this evening, the deposed dictator was still in American custody at Camp Cropper, a U.S. military base on Baghdad's outskirts, U.S. officials said. U.S. sources said that Hussein will be handed over to Iraqi authorities shortly before his execution to minimize security risks.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki met with Cabinet officials and other politicians today to discuss plans to hang Hussein. Conflicting reports about the timing of Hussein's execution and whether U.S. authorities had handed over custody to the Iraqi government emerged throughout today.

If Hussein is executed during the next few days, it would coincide with the end of the hajj ? or the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.

U.S. officials said that they were surprised by the rejection of Hussein's capital appeal earlier this week and by the swiftness with which the Iraqi government pushed for his execution. Officials expressed concern that news of the imminent execution may give insurgents time to plan attacks. U.S. military officials said that they were beefing up security in Baghdad advance of the execution and possible retaliatory violence.

Iraqi and U.S. officials said that the government would likely extend a customary Friday curfew indefinitely.</div>

Seen it earlier tonight on the French news program. I don't know if it will be taken out Saturday, but we can definitely expect it within the next three weeks, tops.
