I thought this was an interesting article:

    http://hoopsanalyst.com/eras.htm

Here are the league-wide per game numbers for the last 20 years, including stats so far this year:

eFG%: effective field goal% (takes into account made three pointers)
    Poss: offensive possessions per game
Eff: stands for offensive efficiency (points scored per 100 possessions)

I also calculated some other metrics which I thought were interesting:

Ast%: percentage of made field goals that were assisted
Stl%: percentage of possessions that ended with a steal
Blk%: percentage of field goal attempts that were blocked
TO%: percentage of possessions that ended in a turnover
FTA%: (roughly) percentage of shot attempts that resulted in a trip to the free throw line
3PA%: percentage of field goal attempts that were 3-pointers

You can see how the use of the three-point shot has evolved over the last 2 decades. Note the three years between 04/05 and 06/07 where the NBA used a shorter three point line. 3-point attempts ballooned and offensive efficiency recieved a boost. 3-point attempts have steadily increased since the NBA went back to the original 3-point line.

Ast% has steadily declined, which indicates that the NBA is increasingly relying on one-on-one play. Since the 98-99 season, steal% and turnover% in general have declined. Not sure what brought that about.

The block shot and field goal percentage sort of explaining that NBA era today are more athletic but is a dickhead. [IMG]

This comes as total news to me. How much shorter was the short three point line? As the FIBA one?

    Otherwise, very interesting stuff [IMG]

    • Shortened the three-point line (22 feet in the corners extending to 23 feet, nine inches at the top of the key) to a uniform 22 feet around the basket.

Thanks for the breakdown. Most basketball fans have felt the NBA peaked during the 1980's, and if you look at the stats, the 3PTAs was drastically different during those seasons. Maybe Stern needs to see a copy of this and realize hip-hop culture is not ruining the game, what's ruining the game is the 3point shooting.

Teams were more efficient during those years, which led to more points being scored. By far a superior brand of basketball than today's game.
