<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">New Jersey and Charlotte were close Tuesday night to finalizing a trade that would send guard Jeff McInnis from the Nets to the Bobcats for Bernard Robinson, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

The deal, which sources said had a strong chance of being finalized Wednesday, would solve one problem for the underperforming Nets -- getting them beneath the luxury tax threshold -- while still leaving them with a gaping hole in the middle following the season ending knee injury to center Nenad Krstic.

The Bobcats and Nets had discussed a trade that would have sent power forward Melvin Ely to New Jersey.

Instead, the Nets are willing to take back Robinson, a third-year swingman making the league minimum, because of the reduction it would bring to their nearly $67 million payroll. Under NBA rules, the players' salaries do not need to match because the Bobcats are well below the salary cap.

McInnis, making $3.6 million, was told before training camp to stay away from the team while the Nets tried to trade him. He lives in Charlotte, and the Bobcats became willing to take a chance on him after losing Brevin Knight for at least a month after surgery last week. The nine-year veteran McInnis, who averaged 5.3 points and 1.9 assists last season before having a falling out with coach Lawrence Frank, would be joining his seventh NBA team.</div>

And then?... It's just another step to prepare for the move to Brooklyn.

I guess trading McInnis for cap space is decent, it's too bad we couldn't get more out of him.

yea, I just read that the ely deal is off, robinson has potential, but I don't think he would work out in New Jersey

You would trade a firstrounder for Ely?

I don't understand this trade by the Nets at all. Why did they settle for Bernard Robinson when Melvin Ely was the initial target?

Charlotte wanted a first rounder and we aren't going to give that up. We pretty much had no choice, and the 'Cats were the only team interested in him.

I have no idea why they wanted him.

Isn't Brevin Knight injured? They needed someone to back up Felton.

Why would you someone like McInnis around young guys. He's not a good influence.

Charlotte is delusional if they think Melvin Ely warrants a 1st round pick. He's rotting on their bench and will see even less playing time with Sean Mays back in the rotation.

I just don't see what this move accomplishes for New Jersey.

Actually, I'm agreeing with Ice now. I read somewhere the Nets could've gotten Ely for McInnis and a 2nd but opted for cap relief......that's ridiculous.

So the Nets could have acquired Ely if they included a 2nd Round pick, and backed out? They better get a steal in next year's draft.
