why do people try and pretend that the 1992 suns were better then our team now??? i mean seriously, come on now. just take a look at this..i put a lot of time and research into this, so please read. KJ was cool, but not that cool, raja bell would stop him. Dan Majerle is too white to play now days. Charles Barkley would not be able to score on marion/amare/thomas Oliver miller was too fat to play then, and too fat to be alive now. Cedric Cebballos thought he was good, be in reality the only thing hes good at is hyping up the crowds at games Danny Ainge wasnt good back then, and is way too mormon to be good at life Tom Chamber cant play. the only highlight of his life was that one dunk where he jumped really high and now lets look at the roster today Steve Nash- 2 time MVP, chuck never did that Amare- would probably posterize everyone on the old team Marion- his nickname is the MATRIX, i think we can leave that alone. Diaw- best thing from france since fries Bell-used to work at taco bell, now he just eats tacos...AND PLAYERS! Barbosa-hes from brazil, and hes a blur, his nickname should be the brazzilian blur Pat Burke-when the irish fist is pumpin, dont try to stuff him
The current Phoenix Suns team might be the better regular season team, but they have yet to reach the Finals during the post season. You have to take into account the competition level was higher in the early 90's than it is now. The 1992 Suns team won 62 games and pushed the Mighty Chicago Bulls to 6 games in the Finals. You also left off Richard Dumas from the 1992 Suns team. He was a fierce, athletic player, off the bench for the Suns. It's a shame he ruined his career by abusing drugs.
<div class="quote_poster">authentiq Wrote</div><div class="quote_post"> @ the "thought and research"</div> That's exactly what I was thinking as I read it. Can't blame the guy. He was about 5 when the Suns last reached the Finals. Now, I'm not much older than him, but I guess child development says I could appreciate their greatness at 6 more than he could at 5. <div class="quote_poster">durvasa Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">The current Suns team have no one that could stop Kevin Johnson in his prime. Raja Bell? Please.</div> I couldn't agree more. KJ is right up there on the list of most underrated players in league history. If it weren't for being afflicted by every illness and injury known to athletes, he would've gotten more attention as one of the greats. Dude brought his A game every night. Chuck's charismatic attitude took some of the attention away from him but he was just as important to the Suns' success IMO. He helped the Suns to the Conf. Finals in 89' and '90 while averaging 20.4 and 22.5 pts and 12.2 and 11.4 ast per game respectively. This before Barkley arrived and in an era where defensive players were allowed to be much more physical with ballhandlers. By those standards, he's as good, if not better than as Nash, is he not?
Marion would stop Barkley ? Barkley was a tight franchise player. And he was clutch, too. But Nash/Marion/Amare - this kind of trio on your team, now that's SOMETHING.
Depends... In what year would they play, under which rules? Because back in 1992 the 3 point line was farther out & hand-checking and contact with the hands and forearms were allowed by the defense. The NBA has made a lot of rules lately to help the offense, which is partially why the Suns were immediately better when Nash replaced Marbury. Marbury excels in an isolation game that was popular just a few years ago, when Steve Francis was considered an All-Star due to the Iso system. Nash keeps his dribble alive while he slices in and out of the defense (which they can't really stop him, if they even try to put a hand on him, they'll be called for a foul) waiting for a play to develop, that kind of player can do very well for himself with the current rules. In '92 it was popular to play a postup game, which Barkley was one of the best at. Chuck averaged 22 PPG and nearly 12 RPG over his career (12.2 in '92) and he was playing against some of the best Power Forwards and Centers (Hakeem, Ewing, Malone, Robinson, Kemp, Shaq, Mourning, Mutombo, Rodman). Granted Nash has 1 more MVP than Barkley, but during Chuck's years there was a guy named Michael Jordan playing, he was pretty good. Nobody back then could stop KJ and they were allowed to make contact with him, I don't think Bell would "stop" him. I'm not sure what race has to do with it, Majerle could jump, he was a dunker when he entered the league, plus Majerle and Ainge could both shoot lights out. As for Ainge being no good, he shot over 40% from 3 pt range, which remember was farther out than it is today. If you think Tom Chambers is remembered because of that dunk (which I believe was called a charge on him) I feel bad that you're too young to remember how good he was (27 PPG in '90). Richard Dumas was one of the most exciting Suns rookies I've ever seen, he could get to the basket as good as anybody. CC wasn't called "Point-a-Minute Man" for nothing. You forgot Mark West and "4th Quarter" Frank Johnson. Although he's not up against tough competition, Mark West is probably the Suns best center ever and Frank was a spark-plug off the bench. You are simply comparing the athleticism between the 2 squads, you must not know this, but the NBA back then was much more physical. Power Forwards used to be 6-9 250, now-a-days players like Marion (6-7 220) can get away playing PF. I was 11, I vividly remember watching those Suns, they were amazing and it doesn't feel that long ago (yet it was)... I don't think it's possible to really compare because the game is played so differently. Plus if it weren't for John Paxson (or Horace Grant blocking KJ's last shot) we'd probably be rooting for this team to win the Suns' 2nd title. P.S.>> Most people think the 94-95 Suns were actually better than the 92-93 version, and would've probably won the title had they closed out the Houston series. That team had Barkley, Manning, Majerle, KJ, AC Green, Wesley Person, Tisdale, Elliot "Socks" Perry, Ainge, and Joe Kleine (I miss the Majerle/Kleine golf tips ).
<div class="quote_poster">scorbutic Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">(I miss the Majerle/Kleine golf tips ).</div> Wasn't it Ainge and not Majerle? "On the Range with Kleine and Ainge" I believe it was called. That, and Cotton's Corner especially the time he walked in on Chuck getting his dome shaved. On all the other points you made, I couldn't have agreed more. You can say what you want about skill and athleticism, but I don't think there are many teams that were better all-around than the Suns during the Barkley/KJ era.
<div class="quote_poster">Team Steven 01 Wrote</div><div class="quote_post"> Dan Majerle is too white to play now days. </div> What an idiotic thing to say. Congratulations. And I don't see why you need to compare them, or how you can. The game is different now.
marion stopping barkley??? haha. You got me laughing. I also agree that Kevin Johnson was very underrated. He's break anyone's ankles on this current suns team!!
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Wasn't it Ainge and not Majerle? "On the Range with Kleine and Ainge" I believe it was called.</div> Ahhh you're right, my bad! I think Majerle and Kleine are real good friends, for some reason I have them together in my head.
