<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">So now that the dust has cleared from Wednesday's tornado of events, it's easier to survey the Warriors' new roster.

It's clearly a better team, at least in regards to coach Don Nelson's style. It's no doubt much more feasible to work with financially, which will benefit executive vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin in the future. It figures to be a more entertaining team, thanks to the increase in athleticism and off-the-court story lines.

But perhaps the most intriguing aspect resulting from Wednesday's whirlwind eight-player trade with the Indiana Pacers involves a decision that still has to be made, maybe by the Feb. 22 NBA trade deadline. Don't know if you noticed, but the Warriors now have three swingmen: Jason Richardson, Mickael Pietrus and recently acquired Stephen Jackson.

All three will play some shooting guard and small forward in Nelson's system. Only problem is, Nelson doesn't need three, especially since Monta Ellis is a lock to get some time at shooting guard. What Mullin, Nelson and general manager Rod Higgins have to decide is who stays and who goes. Let's say the Warriors keep two, starting one at small forward and the other at shooting guard, with Ellis coming off the bench, or starting with Ellis and the other coming off the bench.

Which two will Mullin keep? How much will salary factor in? Will he move one by the trade deadline or wait until the offseason?

There are already rumors about the Warriors trying to get center Nazr Mohammed from Detroit, which has been shopping Mohammed in a search of backcourt help. "Timing-wise," Mullin said when asked if he would be active near the trade deadline. "I think it's good because it gives us a good month to get a look at this, where we are, to maybe re-evaluate that."</font></font></div>

A trade such as Pietrus/Zarko for Nozzy doesn't sound too good... [IMG]

Nazr is overpaid. We already have an overpaid 5, who is better defensively.

From what I think I heard, Detroit was interested in Sarunas for a PG.

Sarunas makes $4 mil. Nazi makes $5.5 mil. But because we just got Sarunas, we can only trade him straight up for a player. I don't know how that would work.

Although, I don't care because personally I want to see Sarunas stay here as back-up to Baron. I think he'll be great.

But let's face it -- this team is still thin on big men. With POB in the D-League, Foyle is the only other player taller than 6-9. Barnes and Powell are the back-up PFs, and that's only IF harrington plays 4.

We still need another big man...

Sarunas? He's the only guy that will be capable of giving Baron some rest time, which he needs.

Yeah, I edited my post slightly while you were responding. Basically, I want to see Sarunas do well here because I really think he'll be a quality point guard under Nellie. In fact I think he is the sleeper of this trade for GS.

But this was what I thought I heard -- that Detroit wanted some back-court help like a PG.

I don't know about Nazr. But that is a very, very interesting statement. So is this <div class="quote_poster">Quoting "article":</div><div class="quote_post">"Timing-wise," Mullin said when asked if he would be active near the trade deadline. Did someone mention Andrei Kirilenko?

Looking at Nazr's stats, he definitley isn't that bad. His contract doesn't appear to be too horrible. I am not sure what the Warriors would decide to offer him though. Pietrus/Zarko for Nazr seems pretty even if the Warriors want to go that direction. Pietrus is injured and injury prone with an expiring contract. Getting Nazr for Pietrus definitley beats losing Pietrus for nothing. I'd first look at AK though.

I'd trade JRich and just about anyone (probably even including Monta) for Gasol, but not Biedrins. Gasol is a legit big man worth giving up talent for, but if you give away Biedrins, what's the point?

I don't think Nazr is as bad as people make him out to be. He's a very good offensive rebounder and can hack a guy or two. I'd like him on our team but within a certain criteria.

I'd be willing to give up Pietrus or Barnes if Detroit takes one of Stephen Jackson or Foyle.

I don't think Detroit would want to take Stephen Jackson or Foyle but Nazr isn't getting much run and his contract is very long, so it depends how desperate they are to save money.

To sum it up: We're not keeping Pietrus after the season. He's played too well and will demand anywhere from Barbosa to Dunleavy money. Now that we have Stephen Jackson on the books, we're not going to pay Pietrus. I'd rather trade him for something then let him walk for nothing. Same goes with Barnes except I wouldn't even want to keep him.

It doesn't have to be Nazr, just trade Pietrus/Barnes for something, even a lower 1st round pick.

Nazr is pretty solid but I don't know if we want to get attached to another 5-7 mil/year long term contract for a guy coming off the bench. Nazr wouldn't start over Biedrins or Harrington at C or PF and I don't think hes really the type of guy who would fit that well in our system. I'd rather go after a much cheaper, more athletic guy who is available like a Melvin Ely or Stephen Hunter who can really run the floor, block shots, rebound, and finish. I think guys like that can be had for some package of Barnes, Zarko (filler), and/or second round picks. Not that Nazr can't block shots, rebound, hustle, etc. but guys like Ely/Hunter get the job done off the bench, no need to pay another guy a mid-range salary for the long term.

Of course I think Mullin is right in saying that the timing of this trade was right, he and Nellie have a month to see what they've got and what they need. I think Powell could become a guy like an Ely or Hunter, I've heard him compared to Haslem though I don't think hes as skilled offensively. From what little I've seen from him and things I've heard/read hes very athletic, good rebounder, hes a scrapper on the inside, with our lack of depth at PF/C and his athleticism and hustle I think he could earn himself some decent minutes. Then again he may turn out to be nothing more than a scrub, but I do recall him playing a bit for Dallas last season.

As for Sarunas, he struggled in Indy with Carlisle's strict offense but I think he could thrive in Nellie's open court system. I agree with Alley Oop that hes in a good position to be the steal of this trade. He was a champion several times in Euroleague, he definitely knows how to run a team, Nelson will give him plenty of freedom to play the way hes used to and if he is a success it will be a huge help to this team because of his experience, FT shooting (and overall shooting really), and ability to take pressure off of Baron. He was the most highly touted established Euro player to be signed in free agency in the last few years, he can definitely play and this is probably as good of a situation in the NBA as he can get to thrive. Even if he doesn't turn out too great I'd keep him around because his 4 mil/year contract expires after next season.

Agree, I also think Nazr isn't as bad as hes made out to be but hes found himself in the doghouse in Detroit and San Antonio before that so I'm not really sure whats up with him. Like I said above I think his price tag is a bit too much since he'll be coming off the bench and we can get a younger, cheaper, more athletic guy to do pretty much the same job.

Lol, I don't think the fans want to see Stephen Jackson in Detroit, and also totally agree we've got to make something out of Pietrus/Barnes before one or both walk. Stephen Jackson is essentially as good or better than both of them and since hes locked up we really don't have much choice, just keep him and re-sign AZ in the offseason.

I think we have a near-perennial allstar (or at least allstar caliber) center in beans. Look at what he's doing at 20 years of age! He's going to be a monster [IMG]

I do. Beans is already solid and he's only 20. Imagine another 5 years of improvement before he hits his prime!

    <div class="quote_poster">AnimeFANatic Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">AlleyOop,

Would you trade JRich and Biedrins for Pau Gasol?</div>

No. But that's not to say Beans will become superior to Gasol.

My reasoning is that they're 2 different players. IMO, we've finally found our franchise center. I know he's a bit thin, but Beans will grow into his own, and I really believe this franchise can hang their hat on Biedrins at center for the next 6-7 years. I really do.

I would love to get Gasol. He's already proven to be an All-Star caliber player, when healthy. But the reason why I wouldn't give up Biedrins is because he brings everything this current roster needs: defense, shot-blocking, activity, and the ability to run the floor. Beans doesn't need to be a go-to scorer to REALLY contribute in a victory.

Gasol, meanwhile, is an excellent low-post / mid-range scorer. But he flourishes most when the ball is in his hands. The problem is there are already players in BD, Harrington, and Jrich who already dominate the ball.

Biedrins, meanwhile, actually flourishes most when he's NOT asked to take the ball and create something. When he's just hustling, defending, scrapping, blocking shots, running, screening, and getting ready to catch the dish from BD -- that's when he's pumping on all cylinders. That's why he's a perfect fit on this roster (heck, at center, that's an IDEAL recipe IMO. Pretty much everything Nellie asked Foyle to do!) Let the other guys command the ball.

Gasol is probably a better overal player long-term. But Biedrins is a rare breed at center, and he's got some special qualities. Plus, he so young this team could hang their hat on him for the next 7 years, and he'll just be entering his prime!

Lastly, with the beautiful chemistry Biedrins has developed with Baron Davis right now, frankly I wouldn't trade Biedrins for anybody. I'd rather give up Ellis, and we all know how painful that thought is.

    So, uh, nope.

But I WOULD give up JRich, Pietrus, Jackson, or whoever else the Grizz want!

How about JRich, Foyle, Pietrus and a pick or something for Gasol.

    Baron
    Monta
    Jackson/Barnes/Harrington
    Gasol
    Biedrins

Woah, oop, you must really like Biedrins to feel that the franchise can hang their hat on him twice! [IMG]

Jackson is the guy to go.....a volume chucker, not especially good D,not a guy who really listens to coaches...not worth the $.

Nazr is a mediocre big with a contract that's too big and too long. It ain't like some red hot talent is pushing him out of Detroit...or squeezed him out in SA.

Best....trade Jax to the Bobs for Ely. They get a scorer cheap (trade-wise) We get a usable big guy..save $ too. Strip clubs in the Carolinas install metal detectors-thus creating new jobs. It's Win-Win,baby!

...my lament was often that Nellie failed to use big men when we actually had some. He ran some of the midsizers into the ground as SF's,PF's. I rather expect Harrington plays some "center" with Jax bringing his badass 3 rbd a game to PF when that happens.

To bad Nazr is so owerpaid, but Warriors need somebody who can share minutes with AB, Foyle can't keep up to tempo warriors play at most of the times. I hope mullin makes another blackbuster trade and gets pietrus with foyle out for some decent PF/C.
If you ignore the Nazr salary, then it's not a bad move Pietrus/Zarko for Nazr, and warriors have solved problems C position.
Well knowing Mullin I bet he will make some trade that nobody was even thinking about.
