Since Gasol is back on the block, and the Nets winning lately seems to have put Kidd and Carter off the block, which I don't believe, I have decided to put together a trade proposal. Orlando Trade Breakdown Outgoing 2nd round pick in 2008 Grant Hill Darko Milicic Carlos Arroyo Incoming Vince Carter Mike Miller Jake Tsakalidis New Jersey Trade Breakdown Outgoing 1st round pick in 2007 Jason Kidd Vince Carter Incoming Grant Hill Carlos Arroyo Pau Gasol Memphis Trade Breakdown Outgoing Pau Gasol Mike Miller Jake Tsakalidis Incoming 1st round pick in 2007 2nd round pick in 2008 Darko Milicic Jason Kidd Successful Scenario NEW JERSEY: The good: They get their man in Pau Gasol, along with an expiring contract in Grant Hill. They also get to start rookie point guard, Marcus Williams, and use Arroyo as fuel coming off the bench. The bad: They lose their first rounder this year, in what promises to be a very deep draft. They also lose their 2 stars, both of which are on the decline of their careers. The ugly: A young team that needs to develop, with a rookie running the show, but hey they would have Gasol, and a player who went to the finals during his first 2 years in the league, Richard Jefferson. Grade: B- ORLANDO: The good: We get some more star power in Vince Carter, and a 3 point shooting threat which we need so desperately in Mike Miller, along with a big man to replace Darko in Jake Tsakalidis. The bad: We lose veteran leadership in Grant Hill, and a chance to see what Darko will end up being, oh yeah and a back up point guard who we all want traded so Diener could get some PT. The ugly: The possibility of Vince Carter bolting after this summer. grade: B+ MEMPHIS: The good: They get rid of Gasol who is currently on the trading block, along with Mike Miller to dump some more salary cap space, but they get Milicic who has promise to become something big, and who would do well with rookies Kyle Lowry and Rudy Gay. They also get the 2nd best PG in the league in Kidd, oh yeah they also get a 1st round pick between the 15-19 spot in a deep draft this year, and a second rounder next year (good players are found in the second round, [i.e Gilbert Arenas, Carlos Boozer, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Cuttino Mobley, man the list goes on]). The bad: They get rid of Gasol, who is their best player, but they don't want him. They get Darko who is unproven but has loads of potential. They also get Kidd's 2 years after this one on their salary. The ugly: The possibility of Darko not turning out to be what everyone expected and being what he was labeled earlier in his career, a bust, and Jason Kidd getting killed by his wife (Just Kidding) Grade: C+
I wouldn't want to trade for Vince Carter because I'm not a huge fan of him. Also, the fact that he could bolt scares me and I'd hate to give up all of that and then just have him leave. Grant Hill and Darko Milicic would be worth giving up for Pau Gasol however and if we could somehow land him, I'd be pretty happy. Having a Gasol-Howard front court would be very dangerous and I think our chances in the weak East would be very good. Also, I don't think this trade is that bad Chuck. It's pretty unrealistic just because so many players are switching teams but nobody is getting raped in this deal. For the most part, it's pretty fair and each team addresses their needs.
It doesn't work for NJ. They give up two franchise players and a pick that might net a good prospect for Gasol, cap space, and a crappy PG. That's a downgrade and I have to believe that they would only offer one of those 2 players (with Kidd being least likely to be traded) in any trade.
The Nets and the Magic. Darko is finally showing signs of developement this season and Carter might bolt after the season. The Nets get REALLY screwed, though. Arroyo isn't worth Kidd's gym shorts, Hill isn't going to help and Gasol isn't worth 2 stars and a 1st round pick. This trade would be decent if the Nets wanted to rebuild because of Hill's contract, but nobody has said anything about rebuilding and they would lose a pretty good 1st round pick.
