Update from Brian Hill's blog. <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">For the past five seasons, before the NBA trading deadline kicked in, the Magic have made deals great and small. In review: Trade Bo Outlaw for Jud Buechler (2001-02). Mike Miller for Drew Gooden-Gordon Giricek (2002-03). Giricek for DeShawn Stevenson (2003-04). Cuttino Mobley for Doug Christie (2004-05). Kelvin Cato for Carlos Arroyo-Darko Milicic AND Steve Francis for Trevor Ariza-Penny Hardaway's contract (2005-06). Will the Magic make another deal? Doesn't sound like there will be anything major, if you read tea leaves left by GM Otis Smith. But here are the possibilities: Grant Hil. Hill has a whopping expiring contract that teams covet, and the Magic likely would let it come off their books unless somebody drops a Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett or Pau Gasol in their laps. Unlikely. Smith has gone on record saying Hill won't be dealt. But that was weeks ago. Carlos Arroyo. The fiery guard has lost his backup job to Travis Diener and isn't happy. He says he doesn't want to go to his sixth team in six NBA seasons, but the Magic don't want any unrest in the locker room. Arroyo is a class act, but the Magic also have three points guards, counting Diener and starter Jameer Nelson. There likely will be a market for Arroyo, and the Magic need a backup big. Diener. Travis finally has received his chance but isn't wowing anyone yet. He can run a team, and can shoot the 3, but needs to be in the right situation with the right team. I never thought of this until now -- and maybe it's a conspiracy theory -- but are the Magic showcasing him? Ah, I've probably watched too many Oliver Stone movies. Darko Milicic. The Magic will only listen to offers because Darko will be a restricted free agent this summer. They can match any deal, but it would take only one team that loves him to blow the Magic budget. It's a predicament. The Magic see Darko's promise and would hate to give up on a 7-1 lefty who can block shots and be handy around the basket. He is essentially in his rookie season after riding the pine in Detroit, but the Magic also see an inconsistent player who, on some nights, looks as if he might never become a star. Hedo Turkoglu: Hmmm, the Magic love his all-around game, if not his streaky nature. You might get a better player in return for Turk, but not a better character guy. Keyon Dooling and Keith Bogans. The Magic have a plethora of shooting guards and wing players, needed with Grant Hill in and out of the lineup. One could go. Pat Garrity. Garrity doesn't get much play at all anymore to show off his shooting stroke. Hard to determine his worth these days but could be a throw-in to a deal. Tony Battie. Battie was signed to a four-year deal last season, and there's no reason to trade him when you are looking for a big. Untouchable: Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, Trevor Ariza and J.J. Redick. Redick? The Magic aren't about to deal their lottery pick after the Fran Vazquez draft fiasco last year. </div> Source
I just heard on the Sports radio show in Miami that the Magic have been offered Gasol for Darko, Nelson, Ariza and a 2nd round pick
Lets look at our tradables: Darko, Arroyo, Dooling, Garrity, Battie, and Hill. Who can we get for that?
Here is another "update" from Brian Schmitz: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">It was a nice story at the end of last season. The Magic came together and put on a finishing kick so impressive that it built large expectations for this season, alerting the league that this was a team on the move. Then they followed up that 16-6 closing run with a 13-4 record to begin the season. And now? The honeymoon is over. The bloom is off Dwight Howard. And if you've seen my e-mails, which have to be treated with a fire retardant, fans are not enamored with Coach Brian Hill. As the Magic prepare to take on the Atlanta Hawks tonight in a rematch, the club is desperate for a victory. This is the most critical stretch for the Hill administration, and it knows it. The Magic have a few weeks before the all-star weekend to turn this thing toward a playoff path. They play only one winning team (San Antonio) in the next nine games before the schedule turns nasty. If they can win 6 or 7 of these remaining games, they will have enough of a cushion to survive a tough stretch against playoff-bound opponents and emerge around the .500 mark. If they can't take advantage here, the Magic will need to mount the sort of run they did at the end of last season to make the playoffs for the first time since 2003. Can they recapture that magic? General Manager Otis Smith says he will remain patient, citing the fact that the franchise already has made too many changes the last few years. But the fact is, Smith will look at all trading possibilities if the Magic can't right this soon --- and the only untouchable, really, is Howard. They'd hate to part with Jameer Nelson, certainly. But after 44 games, you are what you are. And the Magic are offensively challenged, especially late in games, and they need a scorer. They have a surplus of point guards and shooting guards. They have Grant Hill's expiring contract to go fishing with on the trade seas. They have Darko Milicic, a 7-1 big man, to dangle. Might they now be showcasing Carlos Arroyo? Arroyo suddenly was given his job back as Nelson's backup. Perhaps that's a grassy knoll theory. The Magic always talk about how young they are. True. But if you are young, you can't count on Dwight and Darko and Jameer every night. You need veteran leadership and/or play to carry you through the speed bumps. Grant Hill shows up in flashes of his old self. Hedo Turkoglu has not shot the ball well. Arroyo has had his struggles. They don't have a dominant veteran at the moment. Maybe they need to shop for one.</div> Source Do you guys agree that Dwight is our only untouchable? Would Otis actually part ways with Jameer, Darko, or Ariza?
Dwight for Bynum ! Or Smush for Jameer ! (Damn I like those smileys, I don't use 'em almost at all, though). ;D
<div class="quote_poster">Swish Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Do you guys agree that Dwight is our only untouchable? Would Otis actually part ways with Jameer, Darko, or Ariza?</div> Yea I believe dwight is our only untouchable. It would be very hard to trade jameer just because of the chemistry between him and dwight as they both came into the league together and have played together since. Although he hasnt shown up at all of lately. I've seen confidence in his shot and also a better shot selection, but everything else has been downhill. His court vision is horrible, passing is maybe the worst I've seen, and we all know how he can defend. We may as well try to see what we could get for him, you never know who or what we could get for him. As schmitz said we have grant hill's contract to dangle which could mean he may be shown the exit before february. The only thing about trading hill is that he has basically been our go 2 guy down the stretch, and he has been the guy to take the last shot. Darko hasnt done anything but he is tall and some teams would die for another 7 footer.. so I def think we could get some goodies out of him or maybe a nice draft pick. With grant hill having a good chance getting traded I dont think we will see ariza go anywhere. Everyone has seen how he can play and the magic would be stupid to let him go but the magic are known letting go of talent so u never know. I think we need to make some moves to make room for redick on the hardwood. We drafted this guy for a reason and we need a good shooter on the floor. I think the position we could benefit most from is actually the point guard position. I think we need a guy that has great court vision and find the open guy, and please please get rid of arroyo!!!!
I do believe that Dwight Howard is our only untouchable. Here are the people that I believe have the highest trade value: -Grant Hill: Mainly because of his expiring deal and what team fighting for a playoff spot wouldn't want a veteran that averages 15 ppg and is a classy guy? -Darko Milicic: I personally think he should be the next closest untouchable, but since Brian Hill isn't giving him a lot of time a trade could occur. We need to get at least a 1st rounder for him. Don't be surprised to see him dangled with Hill to get a superstar.(unfortunately I'm starting to think VC might land in Orlando) He's still only 21 years old and has loads of potential. He is still getting into shape and shows signs of great things, but then of course makes us say WTF. I think he's our 2nd most valuable piece on our team. -Jameer Nelson: He hasn't developed as expected and really hasn't been that effective this season. The traditionally slow starter line is starting to get old considering we are halfway through the season. His defense is basically non-existent and he's been a huge liability to our team this year. Someone will see the leadership that he possesses and maybe we can get something for him, so that we can save some money in the long run. -Hedo Turkoglu: He is very versatile and is relatively cheap for the work that he does. He does tend to have a couple of injuries and his shot isn't falling now, but he continues to be one of the streakiest shooters in the NBA. When he is on, he is absolutely unstoppable, especially with a low post guy like Dwight. -Trevor Ariza: He is still an unknown. Everyone knows how good his D is and now people realize he can slash too. He is a huge bargain for us, but again if it takes him/Darko/Jameer to get a superstar with Grant Hill, let's do it. He will demand some money when he comes back and he is starting to become a crowd favorite. ---------------- Others that will continue to get looks. Travis Diener: He's waiting to get a look and when he gets in he produces. He can run the offense and everyone knows he can make shots. He doesn't get much PT though. Keyon Dooling: Very fast and very good at defense. Some people might be interested in this guy as a combo 2 guard. Lots of energy off the bench and can put points up in bunches. JJ Redick: He still has his stroke and is a very smart player, but hasn't gotten time in Orlando. His Duke legacy makes teams interested in what he can become. Tony Battie: Most teams could use another veteran big man for a playoff push. He does the dirty work and is a valuable role player that teams need. He's probably the least likely that will go. -------------------- Low Trade Value and Probably just there as a filler: Pat Garrity: Who wants a PF who's only goal is to shoot 3's that has no confidence in his shot? Carlos Arroyo: Who wants a struggling PG that looks for his shot first. Bo Outlaw: He'd be a filler. I can't imagine anyone giving up something decent for Bo. --------- So in conclusion I don't expect to trade any of the most value guys and expect us to trade the bottom half in small deals. Other than the small deals, the only trades I can see happening are Grant Hill and one of the top group for a Ray Allen/Vince Carter(please no)/Andrei Kirilenko/Pau Gasol type player.
does anybody think deiner could be our starter in all real consideration. I think he has potential ability to have all the right skills to run our offense correctly. I know he is know where near his level but i think he could very well be somewhat the next steve nash in all seriousness. He is still young and has lot to learn. Remember it took 6 years almost for nash to even get noticed on the all star scene. I think deiner could bring a lot to the table for us. If he could learn to play "big" and not go in the paint scared he could def do some damage. Does anybody else see his potential like I do or am I just a dumbass
At this point, I can't see Otis trading either Dwight or Jameer. Nelson may be struggling this season but Smith has always let it be known that he trusts Jameer and wants him leading this team for many years to come. His relationship with Dwight really helps him too because Otis knows how important team chemistry is and he wouldn't want to mess it up. I doubt we see any of our core traded before the deadline (that's Dwight, Jameer, Trevor, and Darko) unless we get a great offer involving a superstar player like Gators mentioned. Otis has said that he doesn't think Gasol or Carter are as available as the media is leading people to believe. That makes me wonder if he proposed something (possibly Grant Hill and Darko Milicic) for one of those two players and Jerry West or Rod Thorn shot it down. Unless one of those teams reconsider our offer, I don't think Smith will trade any of our young talent because he seems pretty high on all of those guys. Everyone else is fair game in my opinion. Brian Schmitz brings up a good point in his latest blog when he mentioned that Arroyo getting his backup point guard job back right before the trade deadline likely isn't a coincidence. It seems as if we're trying to raise his value (although hiding him at the end of the bench and keeping him off the court is probably the best way to do that ) and trying to ship him out. Hopefully we can find a stupid general manager that is willing to take him in exchange for anything. I'm seriously willing to give Arroyo up for a draft pick at this point. Whatever ends up happening, I expect a lot of rumors in the next couple of weeks and it should be interesting to see what happens. MainMan, as far as Diener starting, I don't know about that one. Otis loves Jameer and I can't see him leaving or losing his starting spot anytime soon. With that said, I think Diener has the heart and talent to start but lacks the size and athleticism. He would be a liability on defense and I'd be hesitant to hand over the starting spot to a unproven kid whose barely taller than me. We haven't seen much of Travis against other starters (usually he's in during garbage time or against the opponent's second unit) so it's hard to gauge how he would perform with the starters. One thing is for sure, the kid can shoot and that's something that we need desperately. He stretches the defense and would help out Dwight. I'm just not sure if he's athletic enough or good enough defensively to start for a defensive coach like Brian Hill. If Redick can't get minutes because of his defense, it's hard to imagine Diener starting under Hill.
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Magic General Manager Otis Smith, as usual this time of year, spent most of his Monday afternoon on his cell phone, talking with general managers from around the league, most looking to tinker with rosters through a trade. "I'm making calls, and taking a lot of calls,'' Smith said. "But 90 percent of the time, we're hearing from people who want something for nothing. We're likely to take the team we have into the summer, and then we'll be busy.'' Smith said last week that if there is any movement of his players, it likely would be one of his seven guards. He still gets calls about little-used Travis Diener, but no one has offered much real value in return.</div> http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/bask...rl-magic]Source
Update: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Orlando Magic front office had a meeting of the minds on Friday to discuss what they would like to accomplish heading into the trade deadline period. Team president Bob Vander Weide met with GM Otis Smith. Smith said he hasn't been told that there are any financial limitations being placed on him if a blockbuster deal becomes available to him. Trading the expiring contract of Grant Hill could make accomplishing a big deal a distinct possibility. "One of the beautiful things about this ownership group is that in my two years running this thing is that they've never not allowed me to do the business of basketball based on finances," Smith said of owner Rich DeVos and Vander Weide. "Are they going to run the numbers and hold you accountable to them? Well, of course they are and that's what they should do. They're fiscally responsible and I am, too. But if it's a good deal, we're not going to pass up on it."</div> Source
There's no way we can trade Bo Outlaw. That would be ridiculous. I will kill Otis Smith if Bo will be traded. Alright, seriously I think the Magic will trade Darko, Battie, Grant Hill, Turkoglu, Bogans, Diener, Arroyo, Dooling, Garrity, and James Augustine. The only players I see being protected are Dwight(of course unless for LeBron), Nelson, and Ariza. Everyone else could possibly be traded. It would be nice to try to get either Pau Gasol or even Ray Allen if possible. The guys I want to be traded the most have to be Garrity, Turkoglu, Arroyo, and Darko. We can get a lot of value from Darko but at the same time he is garbage. I'm sorry I said that because some people are on his you know what but he isn't that good at all. But he's young and teams do need a big guy so we could possibly get a solid player in return for him.
