Chicago ($461 million) and Houston ($439 million) rounded out the top five. You have to attribute it to the loyal fans. Looking back, the Knicks were put at a sever disadvantage once the salary cap was instituted. They had already signed players to massive deals, and didn't have the flexibility to adapt to the new set of salary cap restrictions. The grandfather contracts of Allan Houston and Stephon Marbury made it impossible for the Knicks to compete with a "money-ball" approach to building a franchise. Right now Knicks fans just have to deal with this predicament for another 3 seasons and wait until 2009, before New York can start competing under the new salary cap rules. In 2009 they will finally have some capspace to pursue quality free agents, and maintain their core of young players.
