I heard on the radio this morning that many NFL scouts are down on Ernie Simms. I guess the word is that he padded a lot of his stats by getting in on tackles after they actually happened, is not as athletic as other linebackers, and will only be ok as a weakside linebacker.

My impression has been that Simms is one of the better LBs in the country. Anyone here have opinions on him?

It's really mixed about him. Ive read a lot of stuff. It's either really good or really bad. One thing I disagree with on what the radio told you is he is very athletic. Sims ran a 4.48 40 yard dash at the NFL combine. He's undersize though. 5'11" 233... He's a top 20 pick for sure though.. I think he'd fit perfect in the cover 2 scheme and I believe that's what Minnesota is running this year..

Yes. Minnesota is converting to the Tampa Cover 2.

I read that Sims is racing up the draft board. Sims would be IMO an above average WLB in the aforementioned scheme. Not the next Derrick Brooks but would provide some stabilty for 5 to 10 years.

I love Ernie Sims. I am hoping panthers trade up to get him. He is a high impact OLB. He is a little small, but plays with a lot of intensity. He has the best combanation of speed and skill of the linebackers. Like Thomas Howard is extremly fast but not enough experence and not a great tackler, Demeco Ryans is probly the best tackler but slow. Ernie Sims is a little mixture of both. He has speed and is a good tackler, but not as good as Ryans.

He scored very well at the combine, but he's only 6 ft tall where as a guy like Manny Lawson is 6'5.

Both fit different schemes though. Sims plays well in a 4-3 or cover 2 but if you run a 3-4 then I like Manny Lawson better.. In the Vikings case Sims is your guy. In the 49ers case then probably Lawson.
