<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Jackson violated his probation in Michigan when Indiana prosecutors charged him with firing a gun outside a strip club, a judge ruled Friday. Jackson was serving probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault and battery charges in September 2005 for his role in a 2004 brawl between Indiana Pacers players and fans at The Palace of Auburn Hills. He is charged in Indiana with criminal recklessness, which is a felony, and misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct. Jackson, who was traded to Golden State earlier this month, faces jail time. But his lawyer, James Burdick, said he believes District Court Judge Julie Nicholson will make a sentencing determination based on the outcome of the Indiana case. Police said Jackson fired a gun in the air at least five times during an Oct. 6 fight outside an Indianapolis strip club. Jackson originally told police that he fired the gun in self-defense, but Marion County (Ind.) Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said Jackson retrieved his gun from his car and fired it before he was struck and injured by another car. He could go to trial in February. Jackson was one of several Pacers who went into the stands and fought with Detroit fans during one of the worst brawls in U.S. sports history. Jackson was suspended 30 games and sentenced to a year of probation, community service and a fine. </div> Source This is going to be an interesting trial for Stephen Jackson and Warrior fans. In the event he gets jail time, I wonder how it effects his contract status with the team?

Wouldn't be too bad to shed a big 7 mil/year contract like he has but he can be a good player in our system. Win-win for Warrior fans.

<div class="quote_poster">shapecity Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Wow. If this is true, then SJax stands to lose $20M!</div> According to Janny Hu the Warriors would have the option to void his contract if he went to jail: <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The belief among Jackson's legal entourage is that he won't be heading to jail anytime soon -- attorney James Burdick said this week he'd be "very surprised" if his Michigan hearing ended with imprisonment -- but Jackson's court appearances bring up the question of what happens if he eventually goes to jail. The NBA issues a minimum 10-game suspension for those found guilty of committing a violent felony. While the Warriors wouldn't be responsible for Jackson's salary for any games missed, they could also move to void the rest of his deal. He is due about $6 million this season and $21.5 million over the following three years. The standard players' contract contains a morality clause that gives teams an out if the player shall "at any time, fail, refuse, or neglect to conform his personal conduct to standards of good citizenship, good moral character (defined here to mean not engaging in acts of moral turpitude, whether or not such acts would constitute a crime), and good sportsmanship, to keep himself in first class physical condition, or to obey the team's training rules."</div> Read the entire article here It mentions just after that that the W's voided Sprewell's 32 million dollar deal after he choked PJ Carlisimo but an arbitrator made them reinstate the deal, that would be terrible if that happened because he wouldn't play for us if we tried to void his deal but were still forced to pay it. His lawyer thinks its unlikely that he'll get jail time and I still agree but with the judge ruling that he violated probation it seems like he is closer to it than previously believed.
<div class="quote_poster">shapecity Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Wow. If this is true, then SJax stands to lose $20M!</div> Just like he walked away from San Antonio's contract offer a couple years back. This guy has proven over and over again that no matter what happens, he's going to make awful decisions. I wouldn't feel sorry if he lost all his money, and between PUNCHING FANS and getting into shootouts at a nightclub, well, if he was anyone other than a pro athlete, he'd have been in jail by now. Maybe that needs to happen.
It would be tough to lose Jackson right now, but if Jrich comes back to last season's form, then that would soften the blow. Personally, I would love to have his contracts off the book and any lingering doubts or possible headaches resolved simply. I feel bad for the guy in a way, because he is trying to start over and fresh, but this is a easy way out for us. Good luck to him, but with that said he does deserve to be in jail for violating his probation just like any other citizen...
Well, if Warriors have a chance to void his contract, they should take the chance regardless of his production. After all, we still need to dump some contracts in order to resign Biedrins and Monta while staying behind luxury tax...
Dump the contract!!! No remorse in this business!!! Except, don't trade J-Rich, Monta, Beans, or BD! Everyone else is expendable.

We have plenty of players and production at SG/SF and a couple young guys to be re-signed to large contracts plus ideally we want to keep one of Barnes or Pietrus (whoever is cheapest unless both are too expensive) this offseason. That would put us in a pretty good cap situation with all the guys signed to large contracts being paid fairly (except Foyle) and movable if necessary.
i would actually keep him. you never know if J-Rich is gonna be the same again, Monta is still young, and Pietrus is all but gone after this year if not the deadline. Jackson to me is a valuable asset for our squad right now. he's 6' 8", knows how to play the game, and does quite a few things for his size on the court. he fits perfectly into our starting SF spot.
Jackson is a very good asset on the team, but you have to look at the cap. If the Warriors could void the contract, this would be a golden opportunity. Why? It will be hard enough to re-sing Monta and Beans as it is. Obviously this is a priority. It isn't about Pietrus. It's about those two. I really like SJax, and maybe the Warriors could then re-sign him cheaper. But this would be a great opportunity to shed contract $$ 6+ mils this year, and 21 mils over the next three. That's a good chunk of change for the two young guys.
And, Nelson has a knack to find a swingman from nowhere such as Barnes and Azubuike, and repaired Pietrus and Dunelavy. Even though Jackson is better than all those players, I think Nelson can find a way to fill the hole if Jackson indeed loses his contract...
Yeah, even though I like Jackson's game (when he's not doing dumb stuff and poor decisions), swingmen are easier to find if you know where to look. Big men on the other hand, we have to look in the draft or find somebody that is on the block. I'm just thankful Jackson didn't point the gun at somebody. Firing warning shots into the air is better than that, except in the case the bullets nail somebody in the head a la gravity. Ever see the movie, "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt + Julia Roberts? Anyhoo, the guy is a thug. I think we can do without him, maybe. We need a big man and big man depth. If Nelson is truly a great coach, he'll learn to play big once in a while should there be an option to find that talent. If you look at a truly great coach, try John Wooden. He could play it small, he could play it big. Didn't matter. He played based on the players he had and that versatility was his strength. He had a system for everything.
I wonder if there's a place on the web to read about the stipulations in a player's contract -- it would be interesting to see how this thing with Jackson might shake out legally.
I guess I'm the only guy who doesn't want him to go to jail? I think he can contribute to the team, and right now we need any help we can get. I gave him a clean slate, so I won't hate on him until he does something stupid.
No, I'm with you AF -- I think Jackson has been awesome for the team, a gritty defender with championship experience -- and possibly the best outside shooter on the team. He's been great -- I'm only thinking about resigning Monta and AB, and every available cap $$ dollar will help -- and I'd take resigning the two young guys over keeping SJax anyday. If there's another way to do it (i.e. dupe someone into taking Foyle, etc) I'm all for it.
