Quote:

6. New Jersey Nets (27-30) -- The Nets, fresh off a 101-90 win over the Knicks, are looking like they're going to surge. Now that trading deadline has passed, with Jason Kidd and Vince Carter unmoved, I think they two will come together. Maybe they realize that this is their last hurrah together. A lot depends on if Richard Jefferson comes back healthy soon. One danger is that they don't have a lot in middle since Nenad Krstic got hurt. And if they get too far down in standings, there's a tendency of veterans to lose their enthusiasm.
Kiki Vandeweghe

Watch out for the Nets.

We're not in the clear yet. Our lead is only 4.5 games and the Nets seem to be playing better now that the uncertainty around the trade deadline has passed. The next few games (San Antonio, Houston for us; Washington, Boston for NJ) could very easily shrink the lead to 2.5. I still think we're going to win the division but, unfortunately, the Raptors are going to have to build back all that momentum they had before the All-Star Break.

Damn, look at the #2-#5 spots. If the Raptors do their part, they could be the #2 seed by the end of the weekend.

Definitely don't want to stay in this position as we will be meeting the Bulls in the playoffs.

Well, with 20 games left in the season, Toronto still sits at #4 with a 4.5 game lead over New Jersey. Miami's been climbing up the standings the past few weeks, I really wouldn't want to face them in the playoffs.

What's wrong with the standings on NBA.com? Shouldn't the Nets be 28-34? The NBA.com standings say they went on a 3-game losing streak, but they lost 4 straight: Boston, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Houston.

Well, I got my standings updated, and New Jersey is now 28-35 losing 5 straight and 5.5 games back of first.

As you all know, the magic number to clinch is now 7. Any combination of Nets' losses or Raptors wins adding up to 7 will clinch us the Atlantic Division title. For the rest of the season we only play 4 different teams with a record over .500 (Miami, Chicago, Washington and Detroit) a total of 6 times. Despite the number of weaker teams we play, we have 3 sets of back-to-backs in April. Heres a look at ours' and the Nets' next few games along with predictions.

Raptors Schedule:
03/26/07 Toronto @ Boston - W
03/28/07 Toronto vs. Miami - W
03/30/07 Toronto @ Washington - L
04/01/07 Toronto vs. Charlotte - W
04/03/07 Toronto @ Miami - L
04/04/07 Toronto @ Orlando - W
04/06/07 Toronto @ Philadelphia - W
04/08/07 Toronto vs. Chicago - L
04/09/07 Toronto @ Minnesota - W
04/13/07 Toronto vs. Detroit - L
04/15/07 Toronto vs. New York - W
04/17/07 Toronto @ Detroit - L
04/18/07 Toronto vs. Philadelphia - W
Record Over the Last 13 Games: 8 - 5
Overall Record: 46 - 36

Nets Next 5 Games
03/24/07 New Jersey @Charlotte - W
03/28/07 New Jersey vs. Indiana - L
03/30/07 New Jersey @ Detroit - L
03/31/07 New Jersey vs. Philadelphia - W
03/24/07 New Jersey vs. Atlanta - W

The Raptors will mostly likely clinch the division near the beginning of April. But if EVERYTHING goes perfectly, and the Raptors have their way they coul clinch division by the end of March.

More importantly, we're tied with Washington for 3rd place. I honestly thought we'd be out of that race, with the way we played after the ASG. But we really have a chance to avoid Chicago in the playoffs and get home court advantage.

Right now here are the current standings in the East (the one on the first post isn't updated).

Seed - Team - Record - GB
1) Detroit - 43-25 - 0.0
2) Cleveland - 42-27 - 1.5
3) Washington - 37-30 - 5.5
4) Toronto - 38-31 - 5.5
5) Chicago - 40-30 - 4.0
6) Miami - 37-32 - 7.0
7) New Jersey - 32-38 - 12.0
8) Orlando - 32-38 - 12.0

Although we're pretty much tied with Washington, we've got to also watch out for Miami who's creeping up on Washington for the Southeast Division lead and competing for the 3rd seed with us and Washington. Luckily the 76ers pulled an upset tonight and beat the Heat.

Best case scenario would be for us to take 3rd seed, have Miami at 4th leading the Southeast Division and have Washington drop down to 6th. That way we won't have to face Chicago or Miami in the first round of playoffs.

Let's go Miami! I'd definitely rather face Washington than the Heat.

Even though we want Miami to succeed and take the division for 4th we have to be cautious that they don't do TOO good and overtake us for 3rd. Hopefully we take advantage of our schedule up ahead against a few weaker teams, and we maintain 3rd.

PS. Does anyone know about the new rules regarding seeding and home court advantage during playoffs? Do they go by seeds for home court advantage to do they go by who has the better record, because I remember someone mentioned that they changed the rules for playoffs.
