Congrats to Kobe. It sucks that his great accomplishment had to be mared by a horrible loss, to one of the worst teams in the league

He'll hold it for awhile, congrats to him.

I think it's obvious this title will eventually be taken over by LeBron.

I wonder if he'll get an asterisk next to his record, because of the new 1 year NCAA rule. Lebron is going through age records like its nothing though, so he may beat it.

"Blah blah blah , lebron is gonna get it so who cares" (large amount of sarcasm there if you didnt notice) its not about lebron at all, its about kobe, who just beat one of Wilts records, which is extremely hard to come by. its not about the future its about now and kobe is the man right now.

Yeah we know. It is just that we have to say something like "oh LeBron will break that record soon enough" so as to not have Cav fans come in crying foul. [IMG] [IMG]

Before I say what I'm about to say, let me first make it known that I think that Kobe Bryant is one of the greatest players to ever play the game, was robbed of the MVP trophy last season, and should probably be the frontrunner for the award this season as well with the way he's gotten his teammates to take their games to the next level.

So with that said, I think the fact that he's the youngest player to ever reach 18,000 points is a very extraneous fact. You have to realize that Kobe Bryant spearheaded a new generation of NBA players who came straight to the pro's out of high school, and therefore all of the great scorers of the 60's, 70's, and 80's had as many as four years shaved off of their pro careers, which pretty much takes them out of the running for this stat automatically. Even Allen Iverson has been a more prolific scorer on his career than Bryant, but he spent two years at Georgetown, so that also took him out of the running for the stat.

What you should really look at is how many games it took a player to reach a certain threshold of points. For example, it took Kobe Bryant 747 games to reach 18,000 points, but it only took Allen Iverson 648 games to reach the same mark. I'm sure the same could be said for other players as well.

AI had 40 mpg in his first season and 39 mpg in his second season.

He got only 1759 points with his first 2 years, while Iverson had 3500+ points in his first 2 years... Beacuse he spent 2 years at Georgetown.
Beacuse, nobody believed that he can really play like other in this age.
Ofcourse, he acted like a kid on the court and he did shoot too much and made many silly shots in his early years.

I know Kobe didn't play as much in his first two years in the league as he does now, but it's still more accurate to judge a player based on how many games it took him to get a certain number of points than at what age he got that number of points.

Besides, Kobe scored almost as many points in the '97-98 season as he did in the '04-05 season.

Yet Kobe had to play with Shaq (in his prime) who needed his touches. Bryant wasn't the first option on his team for a long time (look what he did in 2003 when Shaq was injured) and had to play with an all star backcourt when he got into the league. Taking that into account, I love that he broke that stat.

Well, I'm not really trying to get into a Kobe vs. Iverson scoring debate but was rather just using A.I. as an example in my post.

The point remains the same: Kobe's had 3-4 year on most of the great scorers to reach the mark.

But he still had to play with one of the most dominant forces in the game that took shots away from Kobe. I'm sure this had just as much (if not greater) effect on Kobe's stats.

Saying he had an extra 3-4 years means nothing really, due to the players ahead of him on the depth chart in that time period (and lack of minutes in general).

A greater effect than completely missing four years? Come on.

Kobe was always near the top of the league in Field Goal Attempts, even with Shaq. In 2002-03, for example, he was 16 attempts away from being the league's leader in attempts.

i gotta agree with VC, because Iverson came in the same time as Kobe and AI has already surpassed the 20,000 mark.

Well I really don't agree. Look at the amount of shot attempts AI has taken to get to over 20000 points (and his ugly TS%). AI also averages 41.78 minutes for his career.
