If he wins and does as well as he supposedly can, he has that as one of the defining points of his career. Similar to Vince Carter, he'll be fighting people who ignore his career accomplishments and label him as a dunker. If he loses, then he just loses credibility.</div>

I don't see how LeBron winning a dunk contest would overshadow his career accomplishments. Michael Jordan is not recognized as the 2 time Dunk champ; people mention his rings or spectacular stats first. IMO, Vince Carter has never put up MVP numbers (at least not to the degree LeBron already has at age 21), which is why people only think of his dunking ability.

It seems that the dunk competition seems to have less credibility until superstar names or the leagues top dunkers participate.

For Lebron if he wins the Skills competition where he is 6'8 and very physically strong, but can show that he is quick enough and with the skills to beat smaller quick players like Nash, Wade, and Kobe then he overcame the odds.

Why doesn't LeBron be a man and compete in the dunk contest? You scared BronBron? Can't handle Nate Robinson?

More like he wouldn't be able to handle the judges? [IMG]

Now that I have given it some more thought, I think Bron doesn't want to join the dunk contest because of the weak competition. Why are all these new stars scared to compete with each other?

It should have been Melo, Bron, Wade, Bosh, and Nate in the past few dunk contests.

All-Star Weekend was all about the dunk contest until the 04 season. Ever since it's been going downhill each and every season. I want to see the real stars throwing it down against each other. [IMG]

I'd like to see a 3-on-3 event at All-star weekend. That's something the stars would probably be more willing to participate in (compared to 1-on-1 or a dunk contest).

[IMG] None of those guys are good "dunk contest" type dunkers aside from Nate, and even he sucked ass last year.

Melo is an in-game dunker, as is Lebron...Wade wouldn't be able to compete all that much IMO because his dunking is part of his slashing game and Bosh is a power forward who only dunks normal dunks.

If anything, the likes of Andre, Gerald Green, Rodney Carney, Tony Allen (who seems creative I guess) should compete.

You don't know that, have you seen them in a dunk contest? No.

I can't believe you said Wade wouldn't be good in the dunk contest.

Besides, I would rather see stars bringing their 'A' games in the dunk contest then some unknown rookie, even if those stars are Melo, LeBron, Wade, Bosh, and Nate.

^ASG would be great if they did something like that. I would lmao at Ben and Deke trying to shoot 3 pointers, and Shaq trying to dribble through the cones.

If only NBA Stars could laugh at themselves.

Not sure about Wade, but like Karma said, Melo and LeBron seem like "in game" dunkers to me. When was the last time you ever saw them pull off something creative? I guess LeBron could make the cut because of his popularity, but Melo? Since when has Carmelo been known as a dunker? I would much rather see a dunk contest of Andre Iguodala, Tony Allen, Gerald Green, and Rodney Carney as apposed to a dunk contest of Dwyane Wade, Lebron James, and Carmelo Anthony. They're big name players, but that doesn't automatically make them "entertainment" in the dunk contest. There's better options out there IMO.

If you're looking for big names in the dunk contest, why not go for Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, and Kobe Bryant?

^Because they (T-Mac/Kobe/Vince) have been there & done that. It's the new All-Stars turns to show the world what their capable of, and everyone seems to think it's not much.

You don't need crazy athleticism to be a great dunker. Saying Melo' is not creative enough is just stupid and doesn't make sense.

Anyone can be creative...If it were me I would bounce it between my legs (facing away from the basket) to hit it off the glass catch the ball and do either a between the leg dunk or a 360 dunk.

It's not like we haven't seen everything by now. Everything has been done, but seeing the new stars do them would be entertaining.

T-Mac wouldn't go there anyway beacuse of his back.
But hey, Kobe & Vince in the Dunk Contest again, that would bring everybody behind their TV's.

Kobe, VC, J-Rich and D-Mase to the Dunk Contest (or Wade, Iggy, Gerald Green and Rudy Gay)!

who really cares who wins the skills competition. in the newspaper here in phoenix, nash says he doesnt like participating in these events. he has not once wanted to do it. he says he is honored and it is a privelage, but would rather spend time with his kids. i dont care who wins this, its not that cool of an event.

the dunk contest lost all credibilty last year when nate robinson won.... and you guys keep saying that kobe and vince should be in the dunk competition..... no they shouldnt....they arent that young anymore. kobe is almost 30, and vince is old too. do you guys not realize that kobe hasnt done insane dunks for like 5 years. ya he can still dunk, he can fly, and dunk on people....but not like a 23 year old kobe

I wonder if Kobe and maybe the others were asked to compete in this event. Under the new labor agreement, you have to take part in any All-Star game challenge/competition if asked to, excluding the Dunk Contest.

Smush Parker is pretty explosive. As a non-superstar, he would make a good a competitor in the Dunk Contest.

I really have no issue with the Dunk Contest lacking stars. It doesn't bother me to see JR Smith, Josh Smith, Iggy, Nate, etc. in these. As long as it brings people that can show creativity, I'm cool with it, and that's what they're finding recently. Personally, I think the Dunk Contest has gotten better these past couple years and will hopefully continue that trend this year.

Kinda off-topic but I just had a flashback to last year where Josh Smith placed the tape from so far out and he took off from nowhere near it and dunked. It was so jokes with Kenny and whoever saying J-Smoove is blind.
