<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Bucks guard Michael Redd told reporters recently that he sometimes smells alcohol on opposing players. Gary Payton was asked about it last week by the Miami Herald. "Everybody smells like booze in the NBA to me," Payton said. "You can't call out one person. There have been a lot of victims on that. You can't tell who it was; probably the whole team was on booze from the night before. Maybe the whole team and some of the coaches, too. "Everybody in the NBA drinks. I don't think they would be drunk on the court, but it lingers with them after they've had a drink or two. Mascots are probably all drunk, too."</div> Source
That explains some of the boneheaded decisions players make these days. I found it interesting he accused some of the coaches too.
Nate Robinson, Ron Artest, and Carmelo Anthony are the three players that come to mind. I doubt that these players play basketball trashed though. Night before maybe? You sweat it out, ya know.
Does this really matter? Almost all of the league is over the age of 21, and they're obviously all able to moderate their "substance abuse" to the extent where they can still play a professional sport. Now, if a player were habitually late to games, never showed to practice, or was exhibiting erratic behavior on and off the court, then I could see a cause for concern, but otherwise this is a non-issue to me. I've partied with a lot of athletes from my school, and a lot of them like to smoke, drink, roll, or trip out. These guys just know how to condition their bodies to take the "abuse."
Players are totally allowed to drink in their offtime, why not? Accountants and lawyers get to drink in their offtime. However, I bet most of the ELITE players don't drink as much. Just a hunch. I'll bet Dirk, Kobe, Nash et al know when to call it a night compared to the 6th and 7th mans of this league.

LOL, for real, I do agree that I think top notch players have more control when it comes to alcohol and drinking on game night.

Anyone who has hit the gym after a 4+beer night versus a "stone cold sober" night knows that their body just works better in the latter scenario. If I was a struggling NBA-er and wanted to take my game to the next level, the FIRST thing I would do is not drink on the nights before games...

Use gum in the headache mornings and one word - Alcostop (we have that drink in Estonia, when you feel sick and you think that "I will never drink again" in the mornings, drink that." Are those pics of Dirk, Nash and Wade fake ? Beacuse Wade said that he doesn't make tatoos, doesn't smoke and doesn't drink...
