<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">John Amaechi, who played at Penn State and for five seasons in the NBA, will announce he is gay in an upcoming book.

The book, published by ESPN Books (owned by the Walt Disney Company, parent company of ESPN), is entitled "Man in the Middle." It is due to be released later this month.

Amaechi, born in Massachusetts but raised in England, would be the first NBA player to come out publicly. Few other men's professional major sport athletes have announced they are gay. Among them are football player Esera Tuaolo, baseball player Billy Bean and baseball umpire Dave Pallone.</div>

Very interesting...I'm still waiting for Jeff Foster to come out...if he isn't gay, then I don't believe in gay people.

Is it true that he was the first NBA player to score in 2000?

Yep. No one scored in the first like 6 minutes in the game and I believe he came off the bench and put in the first points of the millennium.

I wonder if his book will reveal the names of other gay players in the NBA.

Ugh, he's an idiot anyway. In England, he used to be one of the hosts during NBA basketball games where he gave his analysis during timeouts, H/T etc... I wonder how the other players that were on his team back in the day feel. Sharing a locker room and hitting the showers and so forth with him.

Why does Jeff Foster have to be gay?

Because Jeff Foster is the most homosexual looking man in the NBA, if he's not gay, I really don't believe there are gay people.

Well McGrady said that he has seen homo action in the locker rooms.

I'm guessing it could have been him since he played for the Magic.

I'm now asking myself what this does for British basketball, thank goodness for Luol Deng representing UK Basketball.

I don't think he'd do that. He picked a time and place (his book) to let people know about his homesexuality, and I think he's considerate enough to let the other gay NBA players he knows of that haven't come out, do so their way. Doesn't seem like a Jose Canseco guy either.

Exactly what I thought - if he's coming out, what other secrets may be revealed, even if names are not named. This could be big - or maybe I'm just sensationalizing a story LOL. This is a step forward, though. If there was a gay player in pro sports, Amaechi's admission does make it a bit easier on him/them.

It depends on how the other players and fans react to this story though. If there's a lot of negative statements made, it likely scares off other players going public.

I'd be uncomfortable in the locker room or showering with a teammate if I knew he was gay.
