Let me know what you think of the following scenario I thought up. It works cap-wise. Memphis Sends: Pau Gasol Miami Sends: James Posey Udonis Halsem Dorell Wright Unprotected '07 1st Round Pick Logic: Memphis gets the cap room in Posey to replace Gasol in the offseason with a legitimate All-Star caliber player, and yet at the same time, they'll have a better shot at tanking with Posey than Gasol and winding up with Oden or Durant. Miami does this because it'd essentially push them over the edge as far as title contention goes. Shaq's getting old, but when you have Pau Gasol in the post, does that even matter? Not really.
I think Memphis gets the short end in this deal. The first rounder won't be that good because if Miami acquires Gasol they will make the playoffs and likely clinch homecourt advantage. Memphis is much better off trading with Boston and getting some legitimate young prospects.

Haslem is still young and will be a good big, not to mention Posey is a good role player. This is without mentioning that first in a very deep draft. There's no way Miami pick would get above 23 or 24 at this point because they'd have to be really amazing with Gasol, that'll take time. Memphis would make like bandits and run IMO. Then with Memphis wanting to run the ball like the PHX Suns, they'd get more athletes to do it with. In the long run, they'd get a good 15 PPG in Wright if he keeps developing, a double-double machine with Haslem, cap after Posey's contract is up, and a player in this year's draft like Acie Law or Tiago Splitter, or someone could even slip to them a la Marcus Williams last year

They're probably not going to be adequately compensated for Gasol through a trade but could likely make up for that loss through free agency. This gives them the cap room to do that, a bunch of young players to build towards the future, and a greater chance of being unsuccessful this season, which believe me, the franchise definitely wants to do so they can acquire Oden or Durant. You're looking at this potential lineup in 2007 - PG - Mike Miller SG - Rudy Gay SF - Rashard Lewis PF - Hakim Warrick C - Greg Oden That lineup has a hell of a lot of potential looking 3-4 years down the road, and I think that's exactly the angle that their management is going for.
I'd do this in a heartbeat, especially considering how Wright is being so underused, plus the rise of Kapono. Which upcoming free agent would really want to come to Memphis though? I'm sure there would be a few if they get Oden or Durant, but this might backfire. Edit: I just saw Bibby in your lineup, do you really think he'd join the Grizzlies in this situation? He's in his prime, nearly 30, and is looking to win now I'm assuming after getting so close with the Kings in recent years. BTW, I think Memphis is better off going after a PF in free agency and let Damon and Lowry control the PG spot for the year (07-08). Not sure what the PF market is like right now, but they can buy time for Alexander Johnson who I think will be a real player in this league.

He's young enough to where he'd still be towards the prime of his playing career, maybe even at the peak of it, when the young guns on the Grizzlies' roster begin to emerge.
Mike Miller at point? Granted, I don't watch much Grizzlies, but Mike Miller at point? Talk about guarding TJ Ford...
I think that trade works well for both teams. The Heat get Gasol to team up with Wade and Shaq, and Memphis gets pieces to continue the rebuilding process.

I think the best thing Memphis can do is trade Gasol to Boston and bomb the entire season the rest of the way. Then they have the best chance of picking up draft choices 1 and 2 for next season cause i don't think Boston will do much even with Gasol on the squad since the Grizz can take some of their other key players. *poke poke*

Trade Gasol to your closest competitor in landing the #1 pick in the draft.
