Apparently on the Dan Le Betard show in Miami today said with respect to the Amaechi situation, "I Hate Gays", and "I wouldn't want them on my team." When told that his view was bigoted he said "Yes."

I'm sorry if this is political but a few people close to me, including my wife's cousin and a good friend's sister, are gay and this just makes my stomach turn. Look beyond labels and you will see that gays are at times more compassionate, kind and loving than those who hate them. I find it hard to truly hate someone who does nothing to hurt you.

I now wish that Tim Hardaway would just shrink away and never remind me that I rooted for him. I cannot root for bigots, even if they are on my team and can put the ball in the bucket.

I don't see what the big idea over gays are. I view them as I do any other person, it's unbelievable how some people can't accept them.

I was quite honestly blown away by his comments. One would think that as a black man, knowing the history of prejudice and bigotry that has oppressed his people for so long, he'd know better than to hate so vehemetly another group of people. Now, I'm not saying that being gay is the same thing as being black or any other race, but I guess I figured he'd have the perspective not to bash another group. It's really sad that there are people who share opinions with Hardaway still out there. [IMG]

Seeing how homosexuality is largely genetic, I don't see how this is any different than racism. He's hating a person because of a genetic trait which they have no control over, very similar to the way a racist would hate a person for being born with certain racial genes.

I agree, but I can almost forgive him though, because I think it's just a macho thing, especially having grown up in an urban community like Tim Hardaway did. Where I come from at least, a lot of people have this seemingly innate he facade of ruggedness that shifts their world view so dramatically that it leads to bigotry and prejudice like this.

I'm of the view that its genetic because how else do you explain that two kids with the same parents come out one homosexual and the other heterosexual?

IIRC, Tim has been making occasional noises about returning to the warriors in some capacity. So much for that, eh? Since the W's happen to play in the most gay-accepting region in the nation, I'd think that his chances are appoximately 0% after such a blatanty homophobic rant.

The whole point of arguing if it's genetic or a mental thing doesn't make sense to me. The fact is that they're gay regardless, so whats the point of trying to prove it's genetic or mental, people just need to acknowledge it and accept it. I'm glad I live on the coast, I'd probably go insane if I lived in any conservative state.

You know there are people like Tim Hardaway in the world and they have no compassion or respect for people that are born different from them. He's probably got the "I hate them, I don't care if they hate me" mentality. That's what bigots do.

If anything, don't African Americans like Tim Hardaway and gay people in general share the same hurt from society over things such as negative stereotyping, paranoia, and bigotry? Hardaway should have some ability to relate to the negative crap going on with being different (as in not White), but he chooses this stance. It's pathetic. I'm not saying being gay is the same as what African Americans went through, but I'm saying that individuals belonging to those groups share the same frustrations, hurt, humiliation, and disrespect from ignorant folk who don't belong to either of those two groups.

Tim Hardaway is also forgetting the cardinal Chris Rock rule. Don't hate ______ people or your son/daughter will marry one because everyone you hate the most will end up being in your family. It'll be entertaining to see Tim Jr bring home some guy named "Lance" for a "coming out" announcement. Hehehe.

What do people say about pro sports? like that they are only a micro-something of society? I mean there are a lot of people in the USA and also maybe even in professional sports who feel the same way. I can't knock him for not being honest. But I agree that bigotry is dumb and it would be great if there wasn't any. But that's not the case unfortunately.

Being in-tune with society, being against gays isn't a rare position in the United States (I mean look how slow things are in Congress and state governments in accepting gay marriages or what have you). I do think that society is making strides to overcome a lot of the hatred/intolerence with the gay culture especially over the last couple of decades and also in recent years.

Also, being so close to your teammates as you are in professional team sports like the NBA, it would be a little strange at first (at least for a lot of people) to know that a teammate is gay. I suppose we could slap Tim Hardaway on the back of his hand for saying this in the media. However I am kind of tired of people expecting professional players to be angels or saints. We could blame the media for actually asking that question, but if they didn't then maybe there would be less opportunity to talk about our social problems and how to maybe overcome them.

So even though I agree with all of the posters above who are against bigotry of gays and others in general, I can't blame Hardaway for being honest, and I can accept the media to publish such information, so hopefully it can start more discussions to improve society. Also to add on the macho comments, the bottom line is that these guys are all jocks either way you cut it so being politically correct probably isn't very important to them anyhow.

It's funny, at around two in the afternoon I saw Hardaway on ESPN News talking about how he was in Vegas as a rep for the NBA Cares people, and now I guess they're removing him from their promotions.

A shame Tim, a damn shame....

this is apples and oranges..... but i just dont understand how the league embraces a rapist who can buy his accuser off....Kobe as if it never happened.... he was not prosecuted because he paid her off in a settlement. I personally feel that Kobe should have been banned from the NBA, or had his case gone to trial and his innocence proven. Him buying off his accuser leads me to believe he is guilty as hell.

I wonder if Oj were 30 years younger when he allegedly committed his crime, yet was found innocent, if the NFL would embrace him again... I guess that would be like if payton manning was accused of the same situation, would the NFL take him back?

It's actually ironic how this isn't really correct. Homosexuals were not enslaved and forced to work in unimaginably horrific working conditions for absolutely nothing. But they were killed and tortured and regularly prosecuted for what they are. We have primarily the Bible to thank for that sentiment, just as white supremacists used the Bible to defend their stance on the enslavement of Blacks.

So, I don't think the comparison you made should be put down by the detail. They all went through some terrible stuff.

As far as what Tim said, it's just stupid. How would he feel if the owner of Golden State came out and said "I hate n******". This is especially awful because of the correlation with Black History Month. After everything your own people went through, you're going to go out and prosecute someone else? Great way to show tolerance and compassion Tim.

I know a few gay people, and they're all stand up acts. It just ticks me off to hear this kind of stupidity, especially from a great player like him.

Wtf are you talking about, do you know anything about the accuser? She was bragging about Kobe's prowess in bed a week later at a party and had pubic hair and semen in her panties from some other guy when she took the rape kit exam. She screwed three different guys in that four day span Kobe was with her, had sex with another guy within 24 hours of the alleged rape, and had about 65 sexual partners in a one year span. Her friends wanted to write a book about why she is a liar. Her case was quite dubious and she's lucky she got an indictment on Kobe. To speak with as much conviction as you have is ridiculous.

She dropped the charges and the only reason Kobe payed her off is because he didn't want to talk about his other sexual affairs with women (like "Michelle" from New York, his other girlfriend) in the civil case.

Ignorant comments from Tim Bug, and disappointing. He's entitled to his opinion, but the word "hate" is over the top. Tim Hardaway needs to take the time to educate himself and expand his vocabulary.

Uh, that's what I just said...right? Are you just elaborating for me? Homosexuals weren't made into slaves that's the difference. But the majority groups out there humilated them both and discriminated against them even today in modern day society. As far as what happened in the past, maybe homosexuals were killed if they could be easily distinguished. I figure the color of the skin is more distinguishable to hating bigots. Maybe homosexuals back then kept it a secret because of that fear of intolerance and violent acts. But if one is easily identified as being black or part black, then it's different than being gay and keeping it a secret. Gays are not that recognizable unless they're the stereotypical kinds painted in the media.

Do you think this is similar to what was happening in the trial against some Duke Lacrosse players? Or are there just really good defense lawyers out there defending these guys? I guess the duke case is different because I think both sides are racist against each other. One side wants to label the other group before they know all the facts (not following the innocent until proven guilty rule) and the other side was throwing racial slurs around like it was supposed to be funny).

I do see the similarities. In both cases there is a lack of evidence of sexual misconduct, and quite dubious circumstances surrounding both accusers. I talked about the first one in my previous post; as for the Duke accuser, she kept giving different accounts of what happened that night as the investigation continued.

She even said one of the defendants actually didn't "join in" because he "was about to get married", yet this is completely false. The defendant in question had no such plans to get married (which was proven), she just changed her story around when she realized there was even less evidence than she assumed.
